Mossberg 835 or 500? and What barrel length
#11
I have a Mossberg 835 with a 24" barrel and the truglo turkey sights on it, with a extra full carlsons ported choke. for me that is a perfect gun for turkey hunting. some guys like the longer barrels to "reach out" for the farther shots or to keep the pattern a little tighter at a certain distance. Its all preference. But I think a turkey gun is supposed to be either pump/semi, shorter barrel, xfull choke, and the fiber optic turkey sights. IMO. I have used that gun for years now and haven't missed any turkeys yet from 5 yards to about 45-50 yards is farthest. Make sure your ammo is the right ammo for your gun to. that's the biggest part for getting that beard hanging on your wall!.

I have the Mossburg 535 deer/turkey combo. The smooth bore will take Winchester chokes. I put in a Winchoke extra full choke and shoot 3 1/2" and it patterns very well. The 535 is also very universal in what you can hunt with it. Just change the barrel or choke and go.
My main turkey gun is a Marlin Model 55 Goosegun with a 36" barrel. YES barrel length matters. No choke needed here.

All I can say is I've never lost a bird. I try to set up so shots are about 25 yds, but I've shot a few past 35 yds and they fold up like the closer ones. I have not patterned the gun for a long time. At least 10 years ago I shot a couple #5s at 20 yds to make sure it was on left to right and called it good.

dude first off you have awsome taste in turkey guns i mean the 835 and the 500 are in my mind some of the best. but if it were me i would go with the 500 it cheaper and i think after market support is better for the 500 because to hunt goose and duck you will probly need a 28 inch bbl. however a 24 inch bbl is an awsome turkey gun length. i think 20 is a might to short but just my opinion

I'm sure the m-burg will get the job done... I can still see my buddy trying to get his to pattern at the range back in the mid 90's... I hate to admit it but I got a lot of chuckles behind his back... He was hard headed!!! Till this day that gun wouldn't touch my 870... But I do have a box with a least 10 chokes and a shell cabinet with every brand of turkey load in it lol... So I guess it boils down to how serious you are to have the best patterning gun you can have... I was serious and he never really was... So get the m-burg and play with it and I'm sure it will get the job done
