Default Spring Turkey season ???

Just wondering if everyone here is satified with your own states dates set for spring turkey season and the bag limit? Here in Calif I believe they have the season about right but still dont agree with the 3 tom bag limit in the spring and only being able to take one bird either sex in the fall especially with no tag system implemented. To lengthy to get into, but I hunted Texas last year and many of the locals say that the season their should open up earlier. My dad hunted Texas 2 years ago and when he went which was the 2nd week of the season down out of Frier the birds were just about done breeding. The guys their told him the birds had started breeding as early as Febuary. How do you all feel

Our dates are just about right on every year here in Iowa, but it's kinda hard to miss with a 5 week season. Two tom bag limit in the spring and one either sex in the fall is ok, too. I do wish there was a short 'bow only' season before the regular gun season opened and or allow hunters to buy 1 shotgun and 1 archery tag. Now if you buy a archery turkey tag (which allows you to hunt all 5 weeks) your second tag must also be archery only...you cannot buy one of each...and we definitely don't have a shortage of turkeys!

We have a 46 day season and three toms are available in the spring at $11.50 a tag . Fall season only has 900 tags either sex and it is a drawing .Bobgobble if they don't have a tag system how do they keep everyone honest .

There are several states that do not require a tag.

Here in Mn.,our turkey season runs for 40 days, but it is broken down into 8 five day periods. In addition, the state breaks down into 50 different turkey zones, all in the southern half of the state. You have to apply in early Dec. for 1 zone and 1 5 day period Our limit is 1 bearded bird in the spring. The season opens in mid April and closes in the end of May.Breeding is going full bore in early part of season, and about over with in the later part. It's generaly easier to get a permit for the later sesons.

Bob, no complaints down here in Ar, i just think it might be better to open
the season a couple of weeks earlier than they do. but, as far as the limit
I'm perty much satisfied with the 2 gobbler in spring, and 1 either sex in the
fall.

Halcon, they dont keep everyone honest.I think there should be a tag system implemented to help in doing just that"keeping everyone honest".Without a tag system I have a hard time beleiving how they establish a bag limit.I've hunted certain ranches around here for years and have never ran into a biologist monitoring the progress of the wild turkey poulation. The turkey population is thriving here in Calif, but with the stoppage of our trap and transfer program by the do-gooders a continued maintaining of management needs to remain strong. And I feel a tag system would greatly aid in this regard. It certainly wont tell DNR about every turkey thats harvested but would give them an idea on how many turkey hunters we have in spring and fall.

>>>> I've spoken with many Biologists and NWTF Tech. committee reps over the years regarding this question. The reply is always the same. Season framework is elected so as to insure that as many hens as possible have already been bred. Gobbler harvest should(and in my opinion does)have very little impact on breeding efforts and poult production for the following spring.
