What is the proper way to condition pot calls and strikers?
#1
I am having alot of trouble keeping my pot calls sounding good.
So I am wondering if yall could give me some info on the steps to properly condition pot calls and strikers?
I would like both initial conditioning and maintenance conditioning for the various surfaces and strikers? Also any tips you may have for each surface.

I've looked at the information posted here and there doesn't seem to be anything on conditioning stikers. Do most of you do anything to condition your strikers? I've experimented with some of mine by sanding them smooth with 600 grit sandpaper and it seems to help somewhat. What do others here do to condition their strikers?
Thanks for any info.

Good point as I went back and re-read.
Some quick tips.
If you sand the surface of your Pot or Slate call sand in one direction only.
For your strikers they will get smooth with use ~ I just use a piece of 3M sctoch brite on the tip and turn the tip to lightly roughen it up. It don' take much.
Actually in my NWTF vest I have a striker tip brass ring where a small piece of 3M scotch brite is right there. Rub it back and forth or twirl it on that scotch brite surface and I am good to go.
Lastly carry a Bic Lighter. Flaming the surface of slate calls (Only has not done any good on crystal, glass, or metal surfaces ~ works well on slate or ceramic) will dry the surface out quickly. Yo can actually see the color change as it dries.
Be safe out there!

I use mouth calls....................and a few others, but not a slate.
Here's what Brian from NAHC recommends;
POt calls are basically the same. Wipe the surfaces down with alcohol. The object here is to remove and oils, grime and gunk that may have filled in the pores of the surface. Use 60 to 120 grit sandpaper and lightly sand the tip of your striker. Again, alcohol wipe might not hurt. There are some newer strikers that do not take well to sanding. These composite type strikers are best just cleaned up with the alchol.
