Default Got a question

So today I went on an island for turkeys and I have seen turkeys on this island for 3 weekends straight. We where there for 6 hours and didn't hear a gooble one. Had 2 hens walk in and check things out a 1:00 o'clock. I'm not sure what to think of it. We have to canoe to get there so it is a little bit more work. Do you think they leave the island durning the day to feed and maybe come back there to roast. Not sure if they roast there but do know that I have seen alot of turkeys there when I was shedding. Seen them in the mornings and afternoons for sure. Any ideas.

Not sure, but locating the roost would definitely be noteworthy, if they don't roost there, I'd try and find where they did, and get near that in the AM.

How long ago were you shedding and seeing them?

Turkeys love to roost over or right beside the water. There is a good chance that they will fly down onto the island (depending on how big it is) and then fly over to mainland mid-morning. Then, as evening progresses, there is a fair chance that they'll fly back over before flying up to the roost. Although, if I was a turkey, I'd just fly straight to the roost from the mainland. When you are dealing with turkeys (especially easterns, generally) you really have to pattern them well when water is involved. Usually the birds will have a set course that they walk everyday, and usually they will even roost in nearly the same places. If you can find where the birds are traveling and where they are crossing the watercourse, all you need to do is beat them there in the morning.

Thanks for the help. I will have to spent sometime on the island to see what they are doing.
