roost hunting
#11
Setting up in a Roosting area is no different to me than setting up in a Strutt zone or Travel rout, NONE are a guarantee! Isn't that why we hunt, becausethere is no guarantee, for the challenge?
Turkeys don't always roost in the same tree or roost area, thats why they call it hunting.
I would never shoot a turkey out of a tree! Thats not fair chase!
I have hunted in knownroosting areas, strutting areas and travel routs turkeys change their habits according to pressure etc.
Thats just me, to each his own.

You are in a river bottom - is rather wet after a flood - there is puddles and small ponds alll over the place - is midmorning - you working this Tom that comes flying through the trees - as he took off from a ridge to your right- you see him and are excited and expect him to light right in front of you - you have no decoy out - the river bottom trees are huge silver maples - tree canopy and branches are really high - here he comes - he is flying at you as if a poster kid off the Wild Turkey Liquor bottle - You see the red head, the beard - the whole ten yards - He is a Huge birdand he lights in the only dang branch 10 feetoff the ground- 20 yards in front of you. You have called this bird in!
What do you do?

JW- That isn't a roosted bird. Its one you called in. I don't know what I'd do in that situation, but i wouldn't knock you for shooting it. To me you did your work, the bird came to you. you didn't home in on a bird gobbling on the roost then nail him before fly down.

"Dead Bird" Thats what Micheal Waddel said a few years back,,, he did that very thing, called one in and it flew in from a little ways off, and lit ina tree looking for the hen,, he shot it.
But, I wouldnt shoot on from the roost, we can wait for them to come to the rooast in the evening here in Mo, but we do set up and hope they fly down close to us in the morning.
