8+( No bird roosted last night ,, Now What ?
This is something that happens to most of us and were these Old Tough Longbeards are keen to the calling and roosting they don't like to gobble. If you hunt only a spot or two and you try to roost in the evening before your hunt with No responds,, What do you do then ?? not go?
If I know there is birds in the area, I will take the most likely spot and sit before light and wait. When this happens I will not try to locate at all and wait out a Gobble. As soon as I hear one I will quickly move to a setup trying to get in tight if at all possible. Most birds that don't Gobble are call shy so I'll wait them out till flydown and I will work the bird with very soft-suttle Purr's and Clucks. What you plan of attack?...BT

Thats exactly right Bosstom. I also try to get close to a place I know they often roost at. Turkey if not opushed, will often roost in the same place.

I hunt on public land and have a lot of land to hunt.I'll go somewhere I'm confident I'll hear a gobble in the morning. If I don't here anything I'll cover as much ground as possible and try to find something.

Ditto BT!! With new property or some that you have hunted before, I do the very same thing. Let the day begin on it's own and go from there.

BT,one thing I've learned over the years is just because a bird doesn't gobble in the evening going to or on the roost doesn't mean he wont gobble to a locator at daybreak!Another thing I really try to key in on with veteran birds is of which I belive is there greatest weakness is figureing out there home turf!Older dominate longbeards in my opinion are the only birds besides the hens during the peek of breeding season to have an established home area,of which they defend and collect hens.Reading sign, using your ears, and being able to spend time in the woods is key in figuring his or there territory out.Once you find these established strutting grounds, travel routes, and roostsites a pattern can be determined, and with a little patience he or they can be conquered. The tough part for many of us is having the time, but if your like me,you take the time cause you love the challenge!!!
