Since you already know where the birds are, that's one part of the puzzle done.As far as your gun is good to go-it may shoot lead and steel good, but get a few differant boxes of turkey loads and pattern it.Now for what call to use.Use whatever call(or calls)you're proficient with. There's box calls,diaphragms,slate/glass pots,push-pull calls. The mouth yelpers are probably the most difficult to master so if you get these types, practice!Pretty much any brand of call will work if the turkeys are ready to breed.A common mistake of alot of new turkey hunters is that they tend to overcall.Let the bird dictate when you call-this is something you'll learn with a few seasons under your belt. The easiest call to use IMO is the box call-the disadvantage to this and the pot calls are hand movements.Get an instructional tape, learn the calls of the wild turkey and practice-ALOT!Good luck to you and I'm sure there will be more advice and pointers to follow.

Jim gave ya some great advice. The best teacher I know of is the turkeys themselves.Go out before the season.Listen to the hens.Listen to how the gobblers react to the hens. When the season rolls around, you'll be practiced at your callin, your gun will be patterned and you'll have a little understandin of turkey talk. That all adds up to a season of fun and maybe even a bird over your shoulder.Good Luck

$.02...Many gobblers will go silent on you as they make the final approach. Once he goes silent, look sharp and don't let your guard down.

i like slate or glass calls..i have a knight and hale ol yeller and love it..its not hard to sound like a turkey either...push buttons are the easiest but i dont like them myself...dont call alot when you hear a bird off the roost..after he hits the ground call just enough to let him know where you are and tell him every now and then...dont over call or he will definently be suspicious and probally not come in...like joea said..once he shuts up get the gun up and wait hes probally coming or you got busted....anything you need just post someone will help...welcome to the great addicting challenge of turkey hunting...its the greatest...the best thing for a new turkey hunter to do is go along with someone that knows the ropes and takes birds regualarly..if you cant do that watch them on videos and TV....best way to learn..also like someone said..get out there and listen to them in the spring...just dont educate them bu getting busted and dont call when you not hunting...you can use a crow call or one of the other various calls to locate them...they usally gobble back so you know where they are..good luck!

BHC,its good to have you aboard!!Good advice from all here. There's some fine video's out there that we'll help in many ways to give you an idea what to expect. But let me add this although you'll get some good instruction from them every hunt may not be filled with crazy gobblin turkeys runnin and struttin your way!Expect things like weather, hens, terrain, huntin pressure, etc,to have an impact on many of your hunts!Hopefully you'll encounter one of those lonely lovesick toms, but patience and persistance we'll carry you through those frusterating mornings and as you learn it will eventually all come together!Good luck and keep postin and we all might be able to help!!Bob

'Bout the only thing I can add to this wealth of advice is to hunt with as many people who have killed turkeys as you can. You will greatly accellerate the learning curve that way. Then -- HAVE AT IT!!! Its about the most fun you can have and still be legal and non fattening.

Bowhuntercop, I, and probably several of us diehard spring gobbler hunters could write pages and pages of do this and do that but if this happens then try that's.....learning where your hunting is a BIG plus, knowing where turkeys are is another BIG plus.....learn as much as you can from other turkey hunters, but the teachers are the strutting and gobbling toms that we're persuing....I learn a thing or two every year....Spring Gobbler hunting can be the most challenging, the most aggrevating, the most physically demanding, the most patience testing, the most humbling, but the most rewarding hunt there is...all in the same hour.

In our line of work, we must be able to play Dixie and the Battle Hym of the Republic, With Equal Enthusiasm.
