ya look tothe leee side of ridges and open areas is it rains hard......hard rain makes turkeys nervous in thick woods so they seek more open areas.

They still gotta eat - even in bad weather.......

And any break inthe storm may elicit a gobbling free-for all!

So stick int here......

RE: Team Beard Busters [5]

Well guys, I've decided to make my weekend ridiculously long.

I work today from 10 - 6.

After I get off work I'll swing by my camera man's house and pick him up.

We'll pack all of his stuff into the truck and we'll come back to my house.

We'll pick up my dad, all of his stuff, my stuff, and the camera equipment and then head to our hunting property.

Once we get there (hopefully around 7:30 or 8:00) my camera man and I will pack the Double Bull, the calls, the decoys, and the camera equipment up to the spot we'll be hunting Sunday morning and get things set up.

We'll hike down, toss the sleeping bags out in the barn and grab something to eat.

After eating we'll head back to the barn and crash for the night.

We'll wake up around 4:30 and hike to the blind and dig in for the morning.

Since I have to work 10 - 6 on Sunday as well, we'll hunt until 9:30.

Hopefully I'll have a bird taking a dirt nap before then.

Whoo boy, is this going to be a long two days or what?

Well came home with no bird....but I still have yet another weekend.

Thursday morning--Snowing, windy, 25 degrees--set down with the bow and no more than 10 min later a huge tom at 10 yard but he stayed right behind a bunch of trees with no shot.
Friday Morning-- 30 degrees--Same tom comes into 15 yard but through the thick briers--no shot
Sat. morning--31 degrees-Birds too far off and could not call them in
Sunday morning--30 degrees--Called in 2 large toms but the hung up behind a spamp at about 75 no shots!

Every day at exactly 7:30 the birds would stop talking and I would not hear another gobble till the next morning.

It was a cold and tough hunt. THe afternoons got to be very long andnever did hear or see one after that 7:30 time. Oh well, will be up there soon, andas time goes on and weather warms up...huntin will be better.

Good luck yall

OutdoormafiaKP,

You might want to go back and read the regs, because new for 2007 you hunt from 1/2 hour before sunrise to sunset, not 5 p.m. I know WI also changed this year to the sunset, should allow for a better hunt.

MN/Kyle 04-18-2007 08:58 AM

trophy time, you are correct iwas wrong. We double checked everything last night, since my season started today. no luck this morning, didnt even hear a gobble. Gunna try and roost some tonght.

New for 2007!
Hunting hours will be 1/2 hour before sunrise to sunset. (http://www.dnr.state.mn.us/hunting/turkey/springhunt2007.html)

Heading out at 6:00 tomorrow. I'll get to hunt the entire day, so I've got a good feeling I'll at least get one to come into my set-up. I won't have my camera man with me and I'm not going to attempt to film it myself, but hopefully I'll connect tomorrow.

The hens are definitely laying eggs, a good friend of mine called just awhile ago to let me know he came across several nests with eggs in them earlier this morning. Sounds like those toms are going to be feeling awfully lonely later in the day.

Hopefully my Allegiance can have the chance to get the job done. ;)

I'll check in tomorrow night with an update.

Finally connected in southwest OK with my mossberg 835 in the 3rd weekend of the season. Poor weather opening weekend, didn't hunt second weekend. Gobbler had a 9 1/4" beard, 7/8" spurs, and weighed 18 lbs. Scored 54 according to calculator. Not a monster by any means, but I'll take it. I may try with my bow next weekend. Look luck and watch out for the rattlesnakes if you are in the southwest U.S.A., it's that time of year.

Hey boys congrats to those who whacked the birds......according to my numbers we are at

289.687 Guys I will get your scores in!
Points

And I got a story for you! Though we are only allowed out best bird per man or woman in ths contest I scored a real trophy on my 20th year Hunting the Upper Pennisula of Michigan!

I shot a Bearded Hen - has a 7 inch beard and wighed in at 12 pounds and is albsolutley in perfect condition!

She is going to be mounted! Not a feather wasknocked out of her! I could nto behappier......best thing yet .......I found the Youpee to not even be close to breeding.....Toms still in Bachelor groups - Hens in their groups.....Toms would gobble good in the morning and then get a case of Lock Jaw.....Was ratehr frustratiing......so no mating.....no egg laying.....thus no nest to worry about.......

Man I still can't beleive my luck......she clucked a few times thi morning - Iclucked and my partner clucked......took a while but when she got a little closer and my partner clucked at her...she came ah looking to kick some other hen butt.......and as luck would have it noTom in tow!..........but man - have onlyseen 3 in the UpperPenn....int he twienty years we have hunted.

Finally tagged a bird this morning. I set up about 5:30 this morning at Poinsette Electronic Combat range( Shaw AFB S.C.). I tried 2 setups with no luck and decided to just walk & yelp. 2 answered at 9:45 and they came in on a string just like on TV. I barely had time to sit down. Killed the bigger of thetwo 5 minutes later. It was 55 paces to the bird. I'm glad that I scoped my gun this year. I Think he would have weighed more earlier in the season.
17.2 pounds
11'' beard
1'' spurs.

Well guys i went out at 5 yesterday and setup. It started raining pretty good so the birds were pinned down for a while. I only heard 2 gobbles all day, right before the rain started. I sat it out untill 9 when it stopped raining. I moved to the other side of the valley where i had good luck calling last year. I went Very aggressive in my calling style and i didnt hear anything, nothing, i wasnt prepared for the birds to come in the way they did and they spotted me moving twards them. Two toms came in from the brush right infront of me and i was pointed at the road. They didnt talk, just came to look i guess. sorry guys. I'll be in michigan next weekend but i'll have the weekend after that to goout. good luck!!

I took afriend and his 8 year old son with me on Saturday. My friend bagged 2 jakes. I was glad to be a part of that special time between a father and son. We are expecting our first child in about a month. I can't wait till she's old enough to take hunting.

It's finely here. My first of two turkey weeks. I will be hunting MN first, it starts on Thursday but i can'tmake it out til Friday evening. Hopefully it will all end with a bloody arrow and a nice long beard. Then i will leave on tuesday morning sometime to go to WI for the start of that season on Wednesday. My buddy and his wife had this last week and the week before that, and they both got nice birds. But as it always seems to happen when i go it is aways tough going. Someday i hope that my luck will change for the better.

It's not looking good for my MN hunt. Was out Friday and today, and there is absolutely nothing for turkey sign anywhere, no gobbles, no scratchings and no turkeys in any of the fields when driving around. Had about 200 acres, 100 in each of two spots that are about 3 miles apart. I can't even blame the crappy weather because there just isn't any sign that they are even there.:(:(:(
Well hopefully my luck will change in WI.

Boys, these turkeys are really giving me the run around this year. So much so that I didn't even go out on either of my days off this week.

As late as it is, the still seem to be henned up pretty bad. I've got three consecutive days off next week, so I'll hit it hard then and see if I can't pull a W out of the air with my bow.
