the 2006 season was a great season for me. my first set up i called in a turkey to 4 yards but he spotted me and took off. second set up, i called in two jakes to 15 yards and the gobbler stayed out there at 51 yards. i was going to shoot one of the jakes but then a stupid peecock came and ran both of them off, leaving one on one with the gobbler. the gobbler had me busted and would not come closer, so i shot at him. he ran off. i was ticked at that stupid peecock. the next morning, at the same location, i called in 8 longbeards with a few hens and putted to get them to raise their head. again they had me busted so i had to hurry up and shoot. i aimed at the closest one to me which was about 25 yards, bam, i drilled him, the first one weighed 28 pounds and had a 10 inch beard with 3/4 inch spurs. my second turkey was taken from the same location as well, in the late morning. the other one was 25 pounds with a 10 inch beard and 3/4 inch spurs.

I hope to get my first gobbler this spring. Last year I had many close encounters but they wouldn't close the distance, all were with hens.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not doubting you, but the birds you described are 2 or 3 year olds according to the spur length. Those are some pretty big gobblers for that age. Where in the hell are you hunting? That's not near as unbelievable as the guy who said on this forum he killed a 24 pound jake. Are ya'll feeding those turkeys steroids? Heck, a 28 pound turkey is a monster whatever his age is.

these turkeys are in eastern ramona. it was huge. i had trouble carrying it down the hill.lol. there was a horse farm near by where the turkeys would go to and eat some of the grain from a barn just outside the ranch. when i gutted him, he was full of the grains. i will post a pic when i can figure out how to work the stupid thing.

also for the spur length, the spurs on the turkeys out hear will a lot of times look really fat and not sharp. this is because of the rough, mounainess terrain they inhabit. the rough terrain wears down their spears till they are round on the end, and sometimes, breaking them.
