RE: Team #3's Official Roost
Congrats deeq1502!!! You put team 3 on the board in a big way!!
Where'd you hunt in georgia. I am flying to gerogia on sat. Ill be hunting on private land south of waycross. Hopefully i can get a haus like yours. |
RE: Anybody in team #3
Deeg,
Your actual score was 76.25,jrbsr forget to add the decimals to your spurs... Your score is 28 + 12.5 + 13.75 + 22 = 76.25 That is one monster of a bird, congratulations! As for team name, I prefer Snood Stompers or The Snowcone Killers, with no preference...but really like Snood Stompers. Pretty much signals a harvest when you step on the bird's big old snood...love it... Although that turkey in jrbsr's second pic sure does have a nice snowcone to aim at ;) |
RE: Anybody in team #3
Hi Team #3
Ok here's my vote, I really like the second logo but instead of#3 team extreme how aboutteam #3 extreme. That would be my vote for the name as well, Now for the captian I vote for rob. My hunt begins on 4/17/06 thru 4/23/06 the first hunt in unit X here in Michigan I hope to get a big one good luck to all. keep in touch and be safe out there. |
RE: Anybody in team #3
Drhntr178,
I killed this turkey in rockdale county. I grew up on a farm south of town and this bird had two other bigger birds with him. I have all of them on video. I didn't get the kill on video since these birds were strutting in a 30 acre field. The birds are still flocked up, so some advice for you is to call to the hens and bring them in before you go after the big boy. Overall, the past couple of years Georgia has experienced some pretty crappy seasons due to bad hatches. This year should be the rebound for the following years. If you don't have any luck in waycross, try Cedar Creek WMA. This place has tons of turkeys. I had three gobblers roosted, but didn't get to hunt the next morning. There's lots of land and many birds. If you have any questions feel free to shoot me an email. Take care and good luck! David ellis |
RE: Team #3's Official Roost
deeg1502,

RE: Team #3's Official Roost
Well Team is it offical yet.
Do we have a team name & captain. If anybody read my last post, youknow I already put my voted. I'm also glad that our team already scored. My congrat's, I'll be checking in from time to time. |
RE: Team #3's Official Roost
Team 3,
Lets keep each other up to date on each others hunting plans. Also, if you come across an obstacle during your adventure into the turkey woods bring your question to our team 3 thread and lets all try to discuss it. I'm sure most of us on here are experienced turkey hunters, but I love to hear what others have to say about their past experiences turkey hunting. Maybe your obstacle was once somebody else's on our team. As we all know, every turkey is different and doesn't do the same thing twice, BUT you can follow the advice and maybe it will give you a little guidance as what worked before. We can call it our "huntersof the round table discussion," and try to come to some agreement of a method for the kill. I don't know if any of you are in a hunting camp, but after a days hunt you sit around the fire and discuss your experiences that day. Some of the most experienced hunters in the camp give imput, which most of the time works the following day. Remember we're a team and we all are here to help. Good luck and I hope everybody gets a monster bird! GOD BLESS! David Ellis |
RE: Team #3's Official Roost
do we havea team name yet?
|
RE: Team #3's Official Roost
Congrat's on the Monster Tomthat put our team on the board.
My hunt doesn't start till May 1st, I live and hunt in the Upper Penisula of Michigan(Menominee county) The snow has finally melted for the most part. I have been seeing some niceTom's around. I kinda like Big Beard Buster's for the name,But #3 extreme sounds good also. No matter what We pick we will still be known as Team #3 on the board I'm sure. I wish each and everyone a Safe and hopefullySuccessful Hunt. |
RE: Team #3's Official Roost
The turkeys where I hunt are call shy.
I think that is what is going on. They make no sound at all. Except when the go to roost. The toms spit and drun but don't gobble. I heard 2 at one spot but it was so thick and the left following hens. And another spot there was 1 but he was across rail road tracks. Big ditchs on bothe sides of tracks. And wouldn't come across I was on public land. And he was on privite land. The rail road went between. So my 6 million dollar question is. Does this sound like call shy turkeys ? Annnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnd, How do you go about calling call shy turkeys ? Thank You One more thing huntersof the round table To me it sounds real cool for a team name. [blockquote]And since he got the first turkey and put us in the lead. I think he should be, able to pick our team name. [/blockquote] Hunters Of The Round Table sounds real good But to me he has the honers of picking our team name. What do you all think ? Thank You |

RE: Team #3's Official Roost
Hey Team #3
I went scouting Sunday morning & I saw a nich big tom in full strut with 3 hen's. I took my binocular's out for a good look at him & saw that he hada nice thick rope down to the ground. Didn't see his spur's but i'm sure he's gotta be a good one to go after. My hunt start's 4/17/06 thru the 23rdI just hope he's still out there . |
RE: Team #3's Official Roost
jrbsr,
it sounds like you've encountered the mysterious "henned up gobbler!" I'll give you a run down on past situations I've encountered in my past 19 years of turkey hunting. This past weekend I went scouting with a good friend from wellston, ohio. Well, we both went you sunday morning and heard many gobbles, maybe 15 in every direction. After flydown, every singler gobbler shut up except for maybe 3 or 4 birds. Now, the logic to this explanation is at this point in the season most birds are still flocked up. Meaning their still in their winter flocks. Now to make things simpler, these birds are already surrounded by many hens. This almost makes turkey hunting difficult. When you said that all you hear is "spittin' n drummin" well this pretty much sums up my explanation. The gobbler has hens present and really doesn't have a need to gobble. Next time, try owl hooting, crow calling, blowing a pileated woodpecker call, or if your area permits blow a coyote howler. This will sometimes shock a turkey into gobbling. This past weekend, we went to a WMA and tried to call in any birds that would respond to our calls. Well, around 9:00 am we saw a couple birds strutting ina field, so we slipped in and tried many different calls. Mainly some soft yelps, purrs, and clucks, you know the basics. Well after 30 minutes of nothing happening we tried some locator calls. Now once I blew a pileated woodpecker call, almost instantaneously he gobbled. This is just natural instincts for him to respond. Once he gobbled we slipped in as close as we possibly could and then tried calling to him. After I gave him some soft yelps followed by some excited, he gobbled and then I heard the dominant hen reply as well. Once I got in a calling battle with the hen, it was all over. She came in to check things out, and guess who followed...the big dog! My conclusion to this situation is I personally think that when I was calling from 80 yards the hen really didn't care about who I was, but once I was in her general area (within 50 yards) she didn't like it and came to investigate. Once you grasp a hens attention and there's a tom with her, you can almost predict the outcome. Just make sure when you try this maneuver, you know exactly where the flock is. If the gobbler gobbles, then try to get as close as you can without busting the flock. Now with the problem with the gobbler across the rail road tracks...there's really not much you can do. If you have such and obstacle, which in your case you do, just try to pound him with calls. Let him know that you're ready to breed and then shut up and wait. Sometimes when there's a gobbler that is responding exceptionally well to your calls (triple gobbles and so forth) and there's an obstacle in between you and him, try excited yelps followed by excited cutts, and throw in some cackles. Do this for a good 3 - 5 minutes and then shut up. When I use this method, I get right on the property line (without the turkey being able to see me) and start calling like I listed below, but I do this while I'm walking in the opposite direction from the property line, hence your property. Make sure before you do this that he's really responding to your calls (double and triple gobbles) and then give him all of the sexiest calls you can produce as your walking away from him. To him, it sounds like she doesn't want him, or she's with another tom he'll possilbly come in to investigate. Once you get 50 - 60 yards from where you started calling, sit down and wait for 30 minutes. You must remember that PATIENCE is a virture to turkey hunting. I hope this information helps. All that I've listed above has worked on a numerous of occasions during my many excursions in the wonderful months of turkey season. |
RE: Team #3's Official Roost
9th tine,
I'm stationed in Dayton, Ohio, so if you're down during the month of April, look me up and I'll try to see if I can't get you on a bird. I hunt in Wellston, Ohio, but a good friend of mine, whom I met through the NWTF, knows everybody in two counties (vinton, Jackson) and we can pretty much hunt any where we want too. Just give me a heads up and I'll see what I can do. I'm military, so time is hard to come by, especially when I'm a full time student as well. Good luck this season and hope everyone gets the "big one!" |
RE: Team #3's Official Roost
Just checkin' in on the good ole' boys...any hunting plans for this weekend? Hope everyone has a blessed week! GOOD LUCK!

RE: Team #3's Official Roost
Buckslayer1,
I'm located in Dayton and was wondering if you've been out before sunrise this year? If so, how well are the turks gobbling? I went out last weekend and they were tearing it up. There's going to be a big youth hunt sponsored by NWTF the opening weekend and a couple of my buds and myselfwent scouting and heard more gobbles than I could count. Some are still in winter flocks, but with this heat wave heading our way will surley break them up. Good luck this year and be safe! David Ellis |
RE: Team #3's Official Roost

RE: Team #3's Official Roost
drhntr178,
Great job! I spoke with some friends and heard that it's been a really nice week for hunting. It got a little windy and chilly the past couple days, but overall, great turkey weather. How long were you down there? Are you originally from Missouri? Well, glad you got on some birds and killed them in the process. Take care and post pics when you get a chance. David Ellis |
RE: Team #3's Official Roost
drhntr178,
did you kill those birds south of waycross? If so, was it an outfitter you hunted with? |
RE: Team #3's Official Roost
deeq,
I am from MO but I have a relative who lives in Folkston. The first bird was killed on his private land. The second bird was killed on a private hunting club on the St. Marys river near the florida border. I also hunted one day on the Tilly Hawk Hunting Club, near Sirincy (spelling?). The weather was great the four days i hunted. Both birds were a little light on the foot compared to your Ga bird and what i'm used to in MO. |
RE: Team #3's Official Roost
drhntr178, Sounds like you had quite a time!
Way to go in helping our team get off to a running start! Congratulations. |
RE: Team #3's Official Roost
drhntr178,
My little sister goes to school at Valdosta State University, in Valdosta and when I was down there visiting the birds were gobbling great. Were you near the Okefenokee Swamp? Well, great job with the hunt and hope you have a great season in Missouri. |
RE: Team #3's Official Roost
My Congrats
Glad to here that you got'em. Can't wait to see the pics |
RE: Team #3's Official Roost
Has anyone from team 3 been hunting, or will be this upcoming weekend? My home season doesn't come in until the 24 of April, but next weekend I'm going to KY to hunt their opening weekend. I'm going to be near warfield, ky, so if anyone is around shoot me a reply and I'll bring my video camera. I'm currently uploading my hunting footage from my opening weekend hunt in Georgia, so hopefully I'll be able to attach a link to the video sometime tonight. Good luck to all and let me know everybody's plans. GOD bless!

RE: Team #3's Official Roost
Ill be hunting in SD (black hills) come saturday morning. Ill probably be up there for 5-6 days hunting and filming.
deeq, in reply to your earlier question. Yes i killed the first bird in folkston right by the okefenokee swamp. Talk about tough hunting; snakes, mosquitos, allligators, and thick brush and water everywhere. I dont know how a turkey survives there, much less finds any food. |
RE: Team #3's Official Roost
drhntr178- Congrats on your birds.[ Go team 3 ]Also deeg1502 I heard 11 gobblers this morning on the 2 farms I scouted they were fired up.Season opens April 24
|
RE: Team #3's Official Roost
awesome! Well, be safe out there and hit them merriams hard!
|
RE: Team #3's Official Roost
Here is a website I created for personal use and it has some recent pics of the big turkey i killed and it also has a video clip of the two birds I saw that morning. The other bird that was with the one I shot was bigger, so if my bird scored over 76, then this one would have been a definite slammer.

RE: Team #3's Official Roost
Well,I went to KY for their opener and I got another big one! I was hunting near louisa, ky and there were turkeys gobbling all over. Unfortuneatly I didn't any of it on footage due to the fact that I was by myself. Tomorrow I'm going back to call for a buddy, so I'll try to get that on footage. Now I'll give you the stats on this Kentucky longbeard.
Kentucky Gobbler (Typical category) Weight - 25 pounds Beard - 11.25 inches Spurs - 1.625 (left), 1.3125 ![]() |

RE: Team #3's Official Roost
BAGGED MY FIRST MERRIAM!!! THE HUNT OF A LIFETIME!!!
Well i just got back from south dakota last night!! Thank the lord we got our birds before the storm hit. Deadwood, SD got 46 inches or almost 4 feet!!! We drove thru the storm on tuesday sigthseeing, all i can say is, that is the worse snow storm i've ever seen. we couldnt see the front of the truck. Back to the turkeys. Well we got in on easter sunday around lunch and hunted till dark without hearing a gobble, very depressing. The next day we changed locations and heard countless gobblers at daybreak. Set up on a couple at flydown and the went the other way. For the next eight hours we (3 of us) played cat and mouse with three toms and there ten hens. From one mountain to the next, I get exhausted just thinking about it. Finally at around 200pm we managed to separate the hens from the toms. And boy when we did, the toms came running!! The 3 of us had to jump behind a lone pine tree, 12 inches in diameter, with no ground cover in sight. The toms didnt care, they almost ran us over. At 15 yards2 of us shot simultaneously. Two birds went down!! The 3rd guy jumped up from behind us and dropped the 3rd tom right out of the air. UNBELIEVABLE!!!! We were in total shock. None of us have ever heard of anyone pulling a triple on 3 mature toms, ever!! We were able to pull it off on our first full day of hunting in the black hills. None of us have ever been there before, but i gaurantee we will be back. The black hills is in my book one of themost beautiful places to hunt, what an expereience. But i recommend to anyone that goes to do lots of research on the net and byphone with the SD game and fish. Bird stats:My bird: 17.2 lbs, 8.5 beard, 1/2 inch spurs Friend 1's bird: 14.5 lbs, 9beard, 3/4 spurs Friend 2's bird: 14.2 lbs, 9 beard, 7/8 spurs I am still working on the pics. Good luck to everyoneelse. My last season, missouri, opens up monday. |
