RE: Official Team ThunderStrut (10) thread.

Last weekend was KY's youth hunt (4/1-4/2). I took out a boy from my church and he killed a bird and we were out of the woods by 6:20am. Bird had a 10 1/4 beard, 1" spurs, and weighed 22lbs. I then took my little brother at 12pm that afternoon and he killed a bird at 2pm. Bird had 10 1/2 beard, 1" spurs, and weighed 24lbs.Took another boy Sunday and he missed a monster gobbler at 20 yards. The birds are gonna be just right for Saturday's opener. Went scouting yesterday morning and had a group of birds land infront of me. 17 hens and 8 big gobblers. Went to our farm at 9am. and birds were all over the hillsides strutting and gobbling. Gonna have some fun! :D

Alright here is a ? for you turkey guru's. How far can you hear a turkey gobble on the roost? Calm conditions, flat ground faily open land (farm land). I got 3 gobblers gobbling on the roost last night, they sounded far away. So I went around to the next road about .7 mile. Got out the box call and started cranking on it. Nothing. So I go back to where i was crank on it and gobbles again. So somewhere in that .7 mile is 3 roosting toms, just wondering how far their sound goes?

RE: Official Team ThunderStrut (10) thread.

I have heard them gobble as far away as 3/4 of a mile. They can be decieving. They might sound far off but before you know it you are spookin them from the roost. I just like to walk into an area and walk towards the sound. CAUTION might be another hunter. Good luck

mobow 04-11-2006 07:16 PM

RE: Official Team ThunderStrut (10) thread.

Yeah, it's pretty decieving. Usually they aren't nearly as far as they sound. It really depends on the terrain and the weather as to how far you hear them. I've heard them from as far as a mile, but generally speaking they just aren't as far as you think.

ultimag 04-12-2006 11:07 AM

RE: Official Team ThunderStrut (10) thread.

i have heard them probably 1 mile away in calm conditions on ridge tops. just passing through home and heading too Idaho for the opener tagged out in Montana and Wyoming lots of turkeys with a good mix of jakes and longbeards as always plenty of hens. I shot 3 longbeards so far for the team 1- 20# spurs 13/16, 13/16 beard 71/4 2- 21# spurs 5/8 and 5/8 beard 71/83- 22# spurs 3/4 and 11/16 beard 73/4 THE birds were all good 2 yr olds but i think there beards must have frozen over the winter and broke off the average over the years has been 8-9 inches. Also my hunting partner found a monster whitetail dead 7x9 170 class i will get some pix and post them

Way to go ultimag!! Keep it up, sounds like fun!!

Well, the decision has been made to allow my son on our team. He goes by hunt4food and he is becoming quite the hunter. He shot a really huge bird last year, and hopefully he can clobber on again this year.

I'll be taking off Friday for a day of smallmouth bass fishing on one of our local rivers. We're floating 10 miles and I expect to be on the water at least 12 hours. Last time we floated this stretch we caught well over 100 fish with a few being in the 4-5 pound range. Maybe I'll post up a pic if we get a good un! It ain't turkeys, I know....but I still got a couple weeks to go for that.

Yep. He's just like his old man in the respect. He LOVES bowhunting. He shot at his first deer last fall but missed. He's getting pretty good at it.

Yeah guys, I know....this is the turkey hunting forum and our TURKEY hunting team thread, but I just wanted to share this photo with you. This is obviously a small mouth I caught on Friday, but it's the largest I've ever caught weighing in at 2 pounds 11 ounces. I hope your monitors don't explode when my ugly mug pops up on it! :D [8D]

OK after spending four nights in the hospital I am ready to go hunting. Had a blood clot in my lung spent four days attached to a IV filling my blood system full of Heparin thinning this clot out I am ready to go out drove by the place an hour ago and the tom are really strutting their stuff.
Wish me luck out there in the morning I need to break this streak of luck now to good luck. and to all the other on the team good luck hunt safe.

HOLY CRAP MAN!!!!!! That's potentially pretty serious.....(like you didn't know that already....) I am awefull glad you're ok!!!! Seriously.

Good luck out there, and bring us home some points!!!!

I went out to check my camera today and discovered the entire roll of film had been shot. So I pulled the roll and inserted a fresh one. Took the roll to the store and got some awefully good photos!! About 3 days last week a great big huge Tom was caught on candid camera. Man, for his sake I hope he doesn't let me get a pattern on him, cause if I do......he'll die pretty quick!! I'de post it, but it's film and I don't have a scanner. Sorry dudes.

Good to hear you are improving bowhunter. Guys I still have it on the calling, just called my dad in a HUGE tom. But of course he is very inexperenced (his first hunt) and doesnt realize he had to open the window of my blind that faced to the west. He could not see it. 20 fricking yards, the bird gobbled 27 times. Oh well it was cool anyway, now the ol' man is hooked. His response was on the way home "we doing it again in the morning". Mine was "DUH"!

i will get him in the morning maybe a double but mark my words i will get revenge on those two birds

RE: Official Team ThunderStrut (10) thread.

Well I finally got him. Awesome hunt. Called him through a fence and across a creek. I've been guiding since opening day and have finally gotten to hunt by myself. A guy on Sunday killed a bird with double 11" beards, 1 1/2 spurs and weighed 23 lbs. That would've been a good one to get the score for the contest. Good luck guys.

Your score is 24.4375 + 11.25 + 11.875 + 21.125 = 68.6875
