I'd look at a used Mossberg 835 (12 ga. 3.5" chamber). It will pattern well and, most importantly, it won't break the bank. It's a really common gun, and almost any gunshop will carry them.
You can usually come up with a used one for about $200. If I'm not mistaken, the camo model comes with a turkey choke. I'm pretty sure you can get a new one for under $300 as well.
Also, look at the Remington 870 Supermag - 3.5" chamber. You canfind thewalnut/matte version for $300 new. In my opinion, it's more solidly built than the Mossberg, but a little pricier. If you can find a used one, I'd strongly consider going thatroute. Again, this is acommon gun, so there are a lot of used ones floating around.
Both aredecent shotgunsfor field use, and you can mount a scope or hang a slingon it if you like. It will pattern right alongside of the$750-$1000 Remington semi's and Berettas if you mix and match the right load/choke. New chokes/accessories are easy to find. Squirrelswon't stand a chance.
If you keep it clean, you'llget your money's worth out of it.
Go to www.gunbroker.com and search for the guns to get accurate prices of the new and used models.

Like quicksilver said, if you want to spend all of $300, the 870 is a good choice. My first turkey gun, got one first year. No real experience with any other brand...

i've never been too partial to mossbergs, nothing agianst them but i've always been a remington guy. my first 12 i bought(only one i have) is a rem. 870 express turkey camo. it came with a turkey choke, camo stock, and matte black metal. i think i got it for $220. it's not expensive and it works very well. one way or another i would go with an 870 of some kind.

For the money those are two good options.
Also, look at the Stoger's. I've heard A LOT of good things about them and they are cheap. They are owned by Benelli.
Although I like the 3.5'', it doesn't take one to kill a turkey. So, don't let this mislead you.
If I personally had to chose b/t the Remington and Mossberg. I would go with the Mossberg. Their patterns are amazing. I had one, but never used it b/c I love my BPS. I sold it for $200, literally brand new. These are consistantly some of the best patterning turkey guns out of every group. The factory Mossberg turkey choke is the best factory turkey choke on the market.
And if you want to use 3.5'' you have the option with the 835.
The only down fall I would say (my opinion) is that I like using my 11-87 for small game. The 835 was just "too much gun".
I am sure that you aren't looking at the single shots, but this is also a good choice (mostly for turkey hunting). I bought a NEF 10ga to use for this Spring and really like it so far.
Good luck with whatever you get.

Do you really need a 12 gage to kill a squirrel?
How about a 20 gage 3" mag w/a choke tube if needed for turkey...
Then shoot a lighter load say #6 shot out of a 2 3/4 " field load on the squirrels
