Turkey Hunting Whether it's spring or fall doesn't matter to this bunch. Great tips on calling, bustin flocks, using blinds and more.

Will you shoot jakes?

Yeah I would. Mabey after I have a few more turkeys under my belt I might reconsider. But I only get a week to hunt each season so I have to take what I can get.

Early or late, under certain conditions I would shoot a jake. One, if a pack of 4-5 or more came in to the calling, I would. The second, hunt some state land and if a jake happened to venture in, knowing that there is a large crop in the area, think I would also.

In Arkansas the last few seasons you could kill 1 mature bird and 1
jake or kill 2 mature birds and no jakes. I have killed 4 jakes and I have
been hunting for about 25 years, fortunately I seem to have good luck
and bag mature toms. But if I was having bad luck and it got down to
the end of the season, I would definately take a jake if I got the chance.

Nope - under no circumstances......not for me anymore....

I am to the point now that if I can't get Mr. Mature bird - I ain't taking second best.

I passed on 7 Jakes last year at 6 different times in 3 states....Ya I went home without a bird.....in one.

So be it...

I personally would not shoot a jake however I also would never bedrugde anyone who decides to....my first gobbler was a jake and alot of people cut their teeth on a jake...if you choose to...no problem...good for you and good hunting.

The taking or not taking of spring gobblers have no bearing on the population of turkeys/gobblers in a given area.....it's all about the hens.

I used to shoot just mature birds, now that I photograph wild turkeys I only shoot jakes. I figure if I shoot a long beard I can't photograph him.
