During the fall turkey season, would a 22 be big enough to bring down a turkey or should i buy a 22 mag?

Just curious,Would it do me any good tryin to talk ya outta usin a rifle and goin with a shotgun or even your bow.I know here in Pa. a rifle is legal in the fall but I just don't see where it would be much fun.P.S. If you're set on usin a rifle go with somethin bigger than a .22 or even a .22 mag unless you plan on havin them within shotgun range anyways.

Well dont get me wrong, I love turkey hunting with a shotgun. But i just like the feeling of one bullet commin outta the gun. I think that it would actually be harder to take a turkey with a 22 rather than a shotgun because with a 22 there arnt 50 bb's spred out flyin at the turkey. The only advantage with a 22 is the distance of the shot. Where i hunt, it is usually so thick that if you can see the turkey, its within range. All i really want to know is ifa 22is enough gun to bring the turkey down.

Bow,I would say only if ya shoot him in the head with any rimfire would ya get a clean kill.If ya shoot him in the body he'll get away and then die. He'd be aweful hard to locate.

Personally I wouldn't recommend a 22 at all because your going to be tempted in a body shot and that is just bad news. If you think it's easy with a shotgun, your going to be surprised. Get out there and utilize calling and technique rather than just happening on them. You'll enjoy it much more and feel a real occomplishment. Sniping one with a 22 doesn't sound challenging to me. Enjoy.

Ok well i never said turkey hunting with a shotgun was easy. I've been turkey hunting for3 years and have called inmanydifferent gobblers. So I am not new to turkey hunting. I no that shooting a turkey with any type of gun in the body is not a good idea. Why do you think getting a turkey with a 22 isnt a challenge? Have you ever done it? I havnt. So I would like to try it. All I need to know is if I should buy a bigger gun or if the one I have is useable.

I think what they are trying to say , is a head shot on a turkey is a target the size of a Pea. If your good enough to hit that target everytime you shoot your 22 then Yes you will kill the bird in a close range. If the turkey moves just a touch on the shot , you have a wounded turkey on your hands and one that will die some place and may not be recovered. A turkey that some young lad that has never shot a bird in his life will never have the chance of doing.

I understand your thoughts here , but this is why most turkey hunters use Shotguns while hunting them. The brain of a Turkey is only the size of a Pea. A tight shot pattern of a shotgun has a higher percentage of hitting that mark or the neck without having a high percentage of birds running off Wounded.

Out West some States allow Rifle hunting and it is fround against , but the Rifles are generally Higher in calibur and they are taking Body shots at distances , that again can cause safety hazzards towards other hunters...BT

Okay to answer your question bluntly, Yes hitting a turkey in the head with a .22 is a challenge but you can do that beyond shotgun range so I like the added challenge to pull them under shotgun range. That's where it ends. Too many variables of wounding a turkey with a .22 so if you want that challenge, I would definately recommend a larger caliber to lower the chance of wounding. If you can hit them with a .22, you should be able to do the same with let say a .22-250, .222, .223 or the likes.

a .22 will kill a turkey, but a shotugn will put them down on the spot if you hit them. birds shot w/a rifle tend to fly or run a ways before dropping.
