Default Barebow Shooting with Glasses

I'm having something of a problem getting my dominant eye right over my arrows--my glasses get in the way. My frames are as small as I can comfortably wear, yet they still interfere a bit with the string. I've been experimenting with my stance, but I haven't hit on anything that consistently works. Any of you guys wrestle with a similar problem? How'd you fix it?

Hello
I wear glasses but don't experience those problems. You didn't say what you were using as an anchor point. You may have to lower it. I use my broken finger into the corner of my mouth. I shoot three fingers under currently, but used to shoot split fingers without problems with my eye glasses. The length of your bow may also have some bearing on it, but I would think its either your anchor or stance.

Maybe it's the shape of my funny face. I have somewhat of a Roman nose (to put it nicely), so my glasses sit pretty far out there.

Anyway, I usually anchor with my index finger at the end of my mouth, just behind the canine. My best results come from shooting 3-under; whenever I try split-finger, the string nudges my glasses frames.

Thanks for the advice; I'll keep experimenting.

Ran across this just this past weekend. My son, who just turned 10, was once an amazing shot (started shooting when he was two). Within a reasonable range, he could hit pretty much whatever he wanted. Then he had a growing spurt, got braces, and glasses, and his shooting went downhill. I blamed it on his growing so much so fast, but now I think the glasses had more to do with it. I hadn't noticed, but he had changed his stance to accomodate for them. We had the opportunity to shoot with one of the best archers in the state last weekend, and he saw it right away. He went through the same thing when he got glasses, and said it really changed things for him. He helped my son figure some things out, and really improved his shooting within a few targets. One thing I noticed is he anchors with the string on the tip of his nose, head turned sideways. You may have to modify your anchor something like this to keep the string out of the way.

Hm, and he can still see down the arrow, even with his head turned so far? Guess I'll just have to work on it. Thanks for the input.

I had the same problem with my glasses. What I did was to bend the support pieces of my glasses, so my glasses sit closer to my eyes, eliminating the gap between the glasses and my nose. With my stance, I would look right between my glasses and my nose. A little experimenting, and the problem went away. Dont wearing glasses suck?

I struggled with changing my form a bit to accomadate wearing glasses, but still could not get used to wearing them especially hunting during cold weather. This may not be an option for you, but I switched to contact lenses and it suites my shooting and hunting much better. Not all visual problems are correctable with contacts. I can actually see a little crisper with the glasses, but over-all function better with the contacts. Getting used to putting them in took some practice as well but it was worth it to me.

Grimrapier, I can't really give you any specific advice to help you, but I'm sure there has to be a way to get the arrow under your eye. I struggled with this when I took up traditional archery; not because I wear glasses, I don't, but as a result of messed up teeth as a kid (and the method used to fix them), my canine teeth are position in such a way that they are more like fangs. A natural, relaxed position for me is out of the question. I have to use a radical nod to get my arrow under my eye. It took me a long time to hit on a form that was consistant for me. I'm sure you'll get there. If nothing else, you can always experiment.

I experienced much the same problem when I first got glasses. I'm still not sure how I fixed it, just kept shooting until things began to feel natural again.

...my advice? Keep shooting till you "shoot thru" your trouble. Worked for me anyhow...

Basically the same thing here. I've shot for quite awhile now and until recent (past two years had great vision). I've been diagnosed with a slight stigmatism though slight I have a hard time focusing even though on eye exams they are saying 20 20 w/o glasses.

Anyways, the first year was tough. I too picked up some pretty small glasses, bent them to get them right up on my brows which created other issues but allowed me to keep almost the identical anchor. Since I've noticed myself settling into an anchor albeit slightly lower but with a more foreward head position which is nice as it keeps me from hitting my stinking nose tip. Try that one at -40 once and you'll think twice about shooting in the COLD lmao. At the time I was practicing pretty dilegently on the split vision method and it was coming around ok, then the doc said I needed glass's. The past year has been rough and I cant quite nail it. Eye pains, chest pains and most recently groin pains. The joys of becoming an old fart, I just hope I make it that far.
