Welcome aboard LD, and welcome to our addiction! Not much I could add to the advice already given, but I will give my opinions--lol. I prefer Byron Ferguson's book over Mr. Asbell's--easier to read, and lots of great info. (even though disagree with some of what he says, and don't use his shooting style). I've talked to Byron several times in person, and he is a really nice, down-to-earth kind of guy. Never met Mr. Asbell, but his books, to me, overcomplicated things--and I can't see him (or anyone else) getting away with his "swing draw" method on a MS whitetail. Definately use a Dacron string for your old Bear (B-50 or B-500). Brace height is important, as you will see when you start tinkering with your bow. Some bows that shoot really sweet at the right brace height can be bears when the brace is off. Arrow spine is something you will have to experiment with, although the folks here should be able to get you in the ballpark. It will vary with your shooting style/release, point weight, bow weight, draw length, etc. I prefer shooting off the shelf, but it's a personal preference thing. With the way my luck sometimes runs, I like to keep it as simple as possible. Start out close, work on form and consistency first--when you get these down, accuracy will come much, much easier. Best of luck!

Get Byron Fergesons book, I did and it was a great help! It details setting up the bow, hunting and everything in between.

Geesh, ok then just do a search for
Doug Besherse Traditional archery homepage. He has a chart to set you up with the proper shafts and a lot of good info.
