Default What arrow weight for hunting?????

Okay let' s get this started. I' ll be shooting a 55# @ 28" longbow with 30" Arrow Dynamic Traditionals and a 2 blade broadhead. I' ll be hunting bear and whitetails and distances no more than 25 yards. I' ll assume that the arrows will fly at a speed of about 175 fps. I can put a broadhead on to get the final weight to just about whatever I want. What total weight arrow would you choose???????

Stay around around 10gr per lb. Neither of those critters are thick skined so anything that flies good around that weight will work. Most important is hitting them where it counts.

I usually keep my hunting arrows in the 600gr range +/- 25gr or so. I have some that wieght in considerably more. My last few deer and ram were shot with 680gr ash arrows. Quiet, great penetration and very durable. I am going to try some laminated birch and maple that will finish out in the 700gr range this year too. For deer and black bear anthing over 450gr and flying straight should get the job done, I just like the way the heavier arrows feel coming off the bow.

A more important concern than arrow weight is how well the arrow flies. Remember, the heavier the broadhead, the lighter the spine on the arrow. Point weight will change spine with all things being equal. I found that I have great arrow flight with 145 gr. broadheads. I tried 175gr. and my arrows didn' t fly as well. I' ll stick with the 145' s with less weight and opt for a clean entry into the animal. IMO , this will give better penetraition than a heavier arrow with poor flight characteristics. Dick

Dick is on the right track. Arrow flight is where it is at. I also lean towards heavier shafts. I did a lot of testing with my compound, and I would go with a heavier shaft everytime as long as it flies well.

I agree that arrow placement and flight are the two most important factors involved in choosing an arrow. That said, depending on what I am hunting, my arrows weigh in from 500g to a tad over 600g. My bow is a 54# CM longbow.
