The Traditional Gods keep on smiling.........(pics)

To go along with Jeff's fun weekend flipping arrows through the longbow, I had a similar weekend myself!
2nd "All Traditional" weekend in the last 3 weeks.
Our archery club "Big Buck Archers" hosted the 15th annual "Pa Bowhunters Festival" this past weekend in Brickerville, Pa at the Camp Mack scout camp. 100 targets over 5 courses and probably 1000 shooters for the weekend.
It was another weekend to let the compound at home and unwind again while getting to know the new Morrison Cougar longbow.
The pictures just show a little bit of the fun we had of non-stop shooting from Friday through Sunday while we camped at the event. The usual, men becoming boys for a weekend as we "camped" on 50's style steel bunk beds, played cards, joked and ate like horses.
I was telling ArthurP that I made a big score last year at the "equipment auction" we hold on the Saturday night of the event. In 2007 I picked up a great $85 recurve bowcase for $10, and a 6 pack of Simmons broadheads for $5. LOL
Well I outdid that this year as the Trad Gods smiled on me one more time.
I managed to snag a brand new in the package Bear Super Kodiak FF 55# @ 28" for a whopping................$85.
Really shot well overall, especially when I got the ranges down into the 22yard and under. Everything over was generally hit or miss high as I learn to see those shot pictures but I made some very long 1 arrow shots out to 47 yards. [:-]. Windage was terrific the whole weekend.
Great weekend great mojo, no competition just having fun and trying to keep getting more competent with this equipment.
The "crew" L to R: Dave, Me, Frank (Kidd642), Russ

Me shooting the Morrison Cougar, frontside

Me shooting , backside

Frank shooting his beautiful Morrison Shawnee TD recurve

A "Do or Die" 33yd black bear we staked to a high cutoff tree......miss and it's bye bye to the arrow. We all hung tough for some good shots!

$85 well spent.

Mark,
Yeah I never really knew what my grip looked like until I saw these pictures.......I don't particualrly care for the tension in my ring and pinky fingers but it's a very loose, fairly high wrist grip and hand angle just like I do use on my compound. Its th eonly grip I know. LOL And no the bow has no handshock and isn't violent at all on the shot. I just let it do it's thing without clamping down on it.
I might cnage my finger pattern slightly and keep them a little looser but it will always just be that basic open grip with some light index finger pressure.
This bow is the one I've been looking for, it shoots right where I look, is whisper quiet and smoooooooooth shooting. Very fast too, as the 520gr arrows were getting to the 35-40 yard targets with some authority.
I don't have a ton of experience with different makes but I know enough to know that this one is top shelf stuff.
It's another "Keeper" for the collection, as will be the Super Kodiak in the picture. It just has some good weekend mojo to it that will make me want to keep it.

. But I know what you mean. Sometimes it just clicks. I struggled with one for over a year. And looking back, I could see it was a dud. Ihave learned that flat trajectory is pretty cool. My 60lb zipper really seems to hit the mark alot more than my 47# osage or even longbow out to 30 yards.
Wow, getting out to 40 yards and connecting? Thats quite an accomplishment. No joke.

Wow, getting out to 40 yards and connecting? Thats quite an accomplishment. No joke.

I missed as many times probably as I connected at the 35yd plus range but when I connected there were some really good 10 or x rings. The best one was the 47 yard mule deer I 10 ringed on the first arrow, and 39 yard javelina and 35 yard deer and bear on sharp downhill angles that I X'd.
When I did miss 9 times out of 10 it was just low right under the pocket with great windage.......my mind just isn't seeing the trajectory quite yet at those yardages.
22-23 and under is just downright encouraging right now as I am really hitting those targets well.
Thatdistance now feels like my absolute comfortable hunting range where I know as long as I don't pluck the string or get an otherwise bad release the arrow is gonna find it's mark. I have also decided I am NOT going to compete with traditional gear.
This is just going to be something that is mine and mine only, a skill to use for hunting and shooting for shooting's sake.
If I get good, I get good..........I'm not using those powers for evil.

Sounds like GREAT fun. Matt. I actually think I grip my LB like my compund, too. At least I think I do.

I'll make sure it's in the truck this fall.....if you make it up to Rob's place. You know you're welcome here, this fall. I have a few live targets.....and the LB would likely see action
.
Congrats on a great weekend.
