I've used it on wood, carbon, and aluminum (with feathers). Best thing since sliced bread IMO, especially if you are in a hurry and/or only have one fletching jig.
I peel the back off with my fingernail, but I can see where the x-acto could help.
One of the great things with fletch tape, especially with wood arrows, is being able to peel off a damaged feather without any damage to the cap or crest. You can take it off, but it doesn't just fall off voluntarily. We've found arrows that had been out in the weather so long the feathers were completely trashed--but they were still stuck.
I'd use glue again if I had to, but I hope it doesn't come to that.
