I've heard about tradbows that will shoot (10 gr per pound) arrows at or over 200 fps, but have never witnessed anything close. Has anyone here ever actually seen this in real life, or is it a wives tale??

More Big East shooters make that claim than all the shooters of other bows combined.
Some Big East shooters claim 210 or more.
If anyone states that they can get that kind of speed with 10 grains, they, most likely, didn't weigh their arrows correctly or guessed the weight, have a faulty chronograph, or are just throwing out B.S.
If they do make that statement, I take it with a grain of salt and laugh to myself without commenting.
They would have to prove it to me before I would believe it.
Compound 3-D shooters also make outlandish speed claims all the time.
I know damn well that some of the speeds they claim with their set-ups and draw lengths are B.S.
That's why I refuse to mention any of the speeds of my Recurves or Compounds on any of the forums.
Someone will always lie and tell everyone that their bow is faster when it isn't.

saw one guy pushing the 200 mark, 30" draw and light arras but nuttin with 10 grains..heck nothing I think anyone could draw anyways LOL.

A buddy of mine who yanks his Martin Hunter back to around 62# @ 30 or 31" and uses arrows somewhere between 9-10 grains per pound shoots 196 fps. Not quite the 10 grains per pound weight nor 200 fps, but not shabby for a production bow...of course I'm sure his long draw length helps considerably. It's likely that there are some custom bows that can do it though.

My 60# @ 25" selfbows, coupled with 10-11 grain per pound arrows are down around the 150 mark.

I don't know the weight, but with a 2312 (or 2213--I forget) cut to 31.5" and a 125 grain point I got up to 209 fps with a Navajo td longbow I used to own (only checked on one chronograph, don't know how accurate the chrony was). This bow was 59@30, drawn to 30.5". This same bow got into the mid-high 180's with ash shafts (on a different chronograph). Never chrony'd my Crusaders--they are plenty fast for me though.

I've seen some claims posted about some bows, and I am like Sag--gonna have to see it to believe it. Not saying it ain't possible, but it sure ain't likely.

On a slightly different note, not all bowyers push their bows to the max on speed. It's been stated to me that "everything is a trade-off". In other words, you push for maximum speed in a bow, you loose stability. I believe the bowyers that know their stuff strive for the happy medium.

Well, the one time I chrono'ed my 'wannabe' it shot a consistant 195/197 (if my release was good) with a dacron string, pulling 55# @29" with a 545 grain arrow. Not quite 10gr/lb but pretty close.

Have not shot for a speed measurement since I switched over to an lbr dyna97 string but I suspect it'll break 200 now.

I have several bows (most bows prolly are IMO)capable of shooting well over the 200 mark w/lighter arrows. My 66# BW shoots tapered cedars well over that, but NOT w/10 gr per #, more like 8.5 gr. Like many of you guys, I'd have to see it to believe it.

My CM Hunter II(54@28&quot will shoot a 2114 (8.5 gr./&quot 180-185 fps. I was probably not drawing the full 28" when i shot it through. I usually don't shoot arrows that light (454 gr.) I think a bow would have to be darn fast to shoot a 10gr. per pound arrow over 200 fps. I wouldn't want my recurve to shoot that fast.
My dreaded compound (60#@27" Mathews MQ1 that is gathering dust) shot a 5.4 gr./inch arrow at 255 fps. I don't know that it would shoot much faster than 200 with a 600 gr. arrow. By my calculations (5gr=1fps) It would be right at 200. Kinda tosses out the 200 w/ 10gr./pound arrow myth IMO. That 5gr=1fps conversion is kinda crude though, I have never tested it on such a large scale. I works well with switching from 125 to 100 tips and the like.

Personally, I'd have to see it to believe it.

10 grains per pound...recurve...200 fps? Nah..

If you had an ultra-light string and a radically reflexed riser you might push close. With anything resembling a stable design...not a chance.

Just my opinion though.

Don Browns new design recurve came close, but still no cigar. He chrono'd one of the few that he built before his death that drew 42#. The arrow was an aluminum 1813 and it shot 205fps. and was so smooth when I shot it that it seemed to let off. Extremely stable too.
