I have thought about the terrain having something to do with hoof size. I know that animals like goats will get lots longer hoofs on softer ground than they will on rocky ground.
Where I live and hunt, there are lots of gravel pits around. I saw these tracks just outside of one. No swamps that I know of in the area--not even a slough.

I have spent alot of time tracking big bucks in the northeast.The best way to tell if it is a big one is to look at the distance between the left side hooves and the right side hooves.The grater the distance the wider the deer is and the heavier it is.
