Sounds like a big 'un. I was talking to my vet buddy yesterday and he said the reason the body size is bigger the farther north you go has something to do with the body's ability to produce heat to survive the colder climate.

Makes sense when you think about it. Ever noticed how bigger fellows seem to shed their coats quicker when hunting than do skinny ones?

3 1/4" is indeed a large track, even for a northern Michigan Whitetail which are as large-bodied as any. Are you measuring just the hoof track or are you including the dew claws? Hope you get him, or at least see him.

Well, I didn't see him, but did find some more of his tracks (has a crooked tip on the left toe) and another scrape. My brother was on another part of the property just looking around earlier and found lots of sign. He believes he has seen this deer, and if it's the same one he described it as very large, with a big rack to match. I did some more accurate measuring today--the hoof length is a hair over 3 3/8", width is 2 5/8". This does not include dew claws--tracks were in hard ground, and didn't see the dew claws. Measured from 2 or 3 differnent spots, believe I got an accurate measurement. Did hear one blow, but that is all--dang wind was way up, and nothing was stirring. Maybe next time.....

Chad, I've seen more large tracks put down by big old does than big bucks. It's my opinion that the size of the track doesn't signify buck or doe. Not to say there is anything wrong with taking a big doe. I sure would! Good luck! Dick

Chad, an educated guess for MS, that would be a biggun. For the Ottawa Valley, that would be a doe!

<BLOCKQUOTE id=quotequote:
Do you happen to live near a swamp? I'm in Louisiana, just down the road from ya and we have been fooled by massive tracks in the swamp, don't laugh I think they are a some sort of sub-species with massive feet, I suppose cause they use them to swim a lot here in the rivers, we killed one, one year that weighed less than 100 lbs on the hoof yet he had feet as big as a horse. I suppose its the same as those big swamp rabbits we have, it's a different breed.

Folks, I saw what I believe was the biggest deer track in my life this evening. My question is can anyone give an educated guess on the size of a whitetail with a track that is 3-3 1/4" long?

Chad
