Default Sighting in a 3 pin sight

What's the best way to sight in a 3 pin sight? I was thinking about going 10, 20, and 30 yards. What do you guys think? I'm working on the 10 yard pin now and almost have it right on. Now do I move back to 20 yards and use the second pin? Do I then adjust the individual pins instead of the whole sight? Looking for reccomendations as this is my first bow.

You can do 10, 20 and 30. Just see what the gap between your 10 and 20 yard pins are. you may be able to have 20 30 and 40.

Depending on the bow you shoot a 10yrd pin is not needed with my bow which is only has an ibo at 305fps and I shoot 2413 XX75 arrows my 1st pin is basically dead on from 1 to 20yrds So if I were you I would start at 20yrds for a first pin and maybe go 2nd pin at 30-35yrds it all depends. you don't want your pins to close together and at the moment of truth when you draw back and its a little dark out and you can't pick your pins apart. sorry for rambling. Good luck

If you need a 10 yard pin then you have a really really slow bow. With any bow newer than 10 years old you should be able to sight the first pin in for 20 yards and find your point of impact at 10 yards is only about 1" high. If you have a bow shooting anywhere near 280fps then you should be able to set the first pin at 25 yards, 2nd pin at 35 yards and so on. Otherwise it's usually 20, 30, 40 yards with gapping for the 5 yard increments.

Now for hunting it's a different story. I set a single pin for 25 yards and leave it at that. It takes care of anything between 5 yards and 30 yards with a mid-body hold. No matter the range, if it's under 30 yards just aim and shoot.

excellent point Bgfisher I'm going to try that and see how it works for me. The less pins the better the line of sight.

I'm all for using less pins for hunting especially with the faster bows.
My setup only shoots about 220 fps so I have some drop, but the difference in point of impact between my 20 yd pin and any point out to 20 yards is less than 3", assuming I'm not shiverring too bad when I let go of the string.

I like to have a second pin on my hunting sight though.
I can set it one of 2 ways.
I either set it to be dead-on at my max shooting distance, say 35 or 40 yards, so I can prorate the distance between the pins and get a more exact aiming point on an animal that is between 20 yards and my max range.
The other way I like to use it is to set the pin so that the vertical distance between the pins is equal to the vertical distance between a deer's chest adn back when he's at my max range. That way, if he looks too small in the sight, I know he's too far away.

Thanks for the great advice guys. I'm right on with zero drop up to 20 yards with the top pin. I haven't gone any further than 20 yds up to this point. Thanks again. This place is the best source of info. I'm sure I'll be along with more questions.

I would set a three pin sight at 20, 30 and 40. You may never need a 40 yard pin, but using the gap between the pins you will have accurate setting form 25 and 35 yards and I'm sure this will be in your capability, if not now, in the near future. You're 20 yard pin will shoot 1" high at 15 yards. That's no big deal, unless your shooting squirrels.
