thinking of getting a fletching jig ( have torn up some vanes and dont want to replace the arrow) and was wondering what is the best way to get the old vane and glue off of the arrow before putting the new one on?

They sell this thing in Cabelas that is made for it. I think it's like $8 dollars. Not for sure, but it is like a blade that is rounded and it shaves off the glue. If you don't want to do that, I used a utility knife and LIGHTLY shaved it off and it worked fine. Just make sure not to press hard.

Those cheap, curved linoleum knives work great.

Ok here is my .02 cents that some would say not to do. I however have not had any problems with doing this. At a hardware store you can buy box blades that are curved similar to a gut hook to take any large amounts of glue off. After that for the cleaning process and further glue removal I will soak the arrows in acetone for about thirty seconds wipe, inspect, and repeat if needed. Some say that acetone will cause a carbon shaft to come apart but this has not ben my experience. On aluminum there should be no problems at all with the exception of the paint coming off.
