Default first hunting setup

Hi I originally posted this under bow hunting but I probably should have posted it here...

Hi, I have recently entered the world of bow hunting and I am looking for advice on my arrow and broad head combo. I have a 2011 pse stinger 306 ibo 29" draw 60# pull. I have been practicing with carbon express predator 2 45/60 arrows 400 spine and 100grain points. The broad head I want to get for hunting season is the g5 stalker 100 grain. I figured before I go out and buy them I would get a little input first. Also would the striker magnum 125 grain be a little too heavy for my bow, I know that my bow doesnt have the best k.e.. The largest game I will be hunting for will be whitetail. Also I was thinking of using 350 spine arrows should this be okay for my bow.

Thanks!

crnewell - Here's what I see you having. You bow with the ibo of 306 fps is at 30" and 70 lb. Just assuming you are going to use a 125 gr tip you're looking at about probably 250 fps (assuming you have a 350-400 gr arrow) and just over 50 ftlb of KE. Now although IMO that is plenty to kill any whitetail around I still don't think you should go with the G5 Magnum Striker. Reason being is if you hit the shoulder, you're screwed. Your bow IMO just doesn't have the energy sufficient to punch through it with that big 3 blade head. I believe you would be better served with a strong cut on contact 2 blade design. A few that come to mind are Muzzy Phanthom, Magnus Stinger and Steelforce 2 blade. Although I've never used them, the Steelforce is probably the strongest of the 3. I have used the Magnus Stinger 2 and 4 blade with good success on several whitetails all expiring within <100 yds and with complete pass throughs. That was out of a 63# 28" draw (roughly the same set up as you have as my IBO is 320) My KE is a bit over 60 ftlb.

Thanks bronko,

I really appreciate your advice, I was originally looking at the muzzy phantom but I was concerned it wouldn't make a big enough wound. I am definitely gonna take a look those BH's.

crnewell - If you don't remember anything else remember this: Its not the size of the wound channel but the location of the wound. A field tip through both lungs will kill an animal. Now a larger wound channel will make for an easier blood trail provided it is a good hit.
An animal hit in the guts will not bleed much no matter how big the wound is. You need to make proper shot placement to quickly and humanely kill your quarry.

get better arrows , you be happier
make sure they are the right size , the ones you are shooting seem a little weak
