Not a waste of time here. After 15 years of managing and working in pro shops, providing it's done right, paper shooting is the preferred method I use. I always check with walk-back, but rarely have to change anything.

Paper tuning is like bore-sighting a rifle. Gives you a starting place. Not somethingI do very often but it's a handy place to start with a new setup. Walk back is a good next step then it's SPC from there.
I just take two brooms or rakes and lean them against the tailgate of my truck with newspaper taped between them. Put a target a few feet behind the paper in the truck bed and you're good to go. (Just don't miss the target!)
