Mount Care
I have a 12 yr old deer mount that has been losing a little hair around the ears and eyes. I have been told that it might be infested with insects. If this is true, what can I do at home to to cure it? Someone told me to freeze it for a few days, thaw it out, then wrap it in a large plastic bag and spray it down with insect killer... is this something any of you would recommend?

RE: Mount Care
Most taxidermy supply companies sell mothproofing products, however, if you already have bugs then you'll have to take immediate steps, one that works for me and is cost reasonable is to wrap the mount in an airtight bag, houshold garbarge bags work well, and place a dozen or so of moth ball in with the mount, leave for a month and then treat with a mothproofer from supply co.
No treatment is permanent so quarterly inspections and treatments are usually needed. Do not freeze your mount! Touchups around the lips and eyes are common and should be done by and experienced taxidermist, hope this helps.
