Starting Taxidermy
I'm thinking about taking up taxidermy as a profession. I don't know alot about it, but would like to try it because it seems like something I would like to do. Is there somewhere I need to go to learn, or do you teach yourself? What all do I need to get a business started in Taxidermy and do any of you do taxidermy for a living and have any suggestions for me on how to get the wheels turning. I'm starting from scratch.

RE: Starting Taxidermy
There is definitly a lot to learn.........but everyone has to start somewhere.
I started out by buying a few videos so I could see what was actually involved in putting a mount together. I then bought a few basic supplies and gave it a go.
There was a lot of trial and error but I eventually got the hang of it. Once I felt confortable with what I was doing.......I took a class to get some good hand's on training. The week long class cost about $2500 but it was worth every penny.
In 4 years time.......I've gone from beginner to having a very successful part-time taxidermy business with many return customers.....doing 60+ mounts per year.
Get yourself a few how-to videos to see what is involved.
Good luck....and feel free to PM me any time you have a questions

RE: Starting Taxidermy
think about WHAT you are saying.... Not trying to laugh or anything but its kinda funny. How are you going to have customers? Your buddys arnt going to pay your bills for you.... ITS A LOT OF WORK. You need to go and apprentice somewhere before even thinking about doing it. You can go a be a Broom pilot for a taxidermist and just let him tell you what you want to her. Because if you just stick a sign out infront of a building somewhere and think that ppl are just gona start pooring into your shop with things they want mounted and you say " Well i just started taxidermy" they are gona leave and then tell all their friends not to go to you because you dont know what in the world you are doing.

RE: Starting Taxidermy
I never said anything about just opening up shop and starting everything from scratch. I wanted to know what everybody else recommends as the best way to learn. It's just like getting started in any profession you wouldn't even attempt to start making money until you know what you're doing. I'm trying to gain the knowledge of the art of taxidermy before I try to make money. But it's a field that I would like to get into and I'm trying to get input on different ways to get started. Sorry if you misunderstood the post but I'm not saying that I'm just going to hang a sign on the garage for a taxidermy service. Also when I do finally learn what I'm doing I will use the power of that thing called advertisement. I'm not trying to just halfway do anything here because that's not how I was brought up. You have to learn to fly the plane before you take off, and I want input on how to learn taxidermy before I try anything. Just asking for input on getting started and learning. Thanks for the comments.
