Default old mount

My dad has a buck that was mounted in 92 or 93. Good lookin mount in front. in the back i noticed it has a hole in it and you can see the mounting piece. it's not foam? it's like old type of wire kinda round form. i think he only paid like $225 for it, is this typical to have that sort of form in a deer 13 years old?

Some of the old timers around that time were hard pressed to change their ways. I knew one that, up until the day he died still used paper maache. Grumpy old cus. he died in 1998
