Borty, my hunt camp has used beagles to hunt deer for years. They seem push the deer alittle slower than the bigger hounds. Just remember watch where you think the deer will come from not where the dog is barking. It's not uncommon for the beagle to be five or more minutes behind the deer.

Beagles make a decent deer dog, but my personal preference is the walker, I've hunted clubs where guys have beagles that just won't push a deer out of the woods sometimes & have turned my dogs in & they didn't have any choice but to get out or get caught

I have hunted beagles for the last 30 years and never had a problem get the deer to move out to where you can see them.the land I hunt has a little over 22,000 acers.
We have found the beagles will push the deer just fast enough to stay ahead of them.the guys that hunt the bigger dogs ,Walker,Blueticks and plots, are always looking for there dogs.they go so fast and hard that you have a hard time keeping up.
I have also found that Beagles will pack better than the bigger dogs.a beagle is happy just running with the pach and not wanting to be the lead dog.most walker dogs that I have hunted with wants to be the lead dog and catch the game, run as hard as you can and be first.don't get me wrong Walkers are a great breed, and they can run as good or better than others, just to hard and fast for me.
we usuall kill more deer ahead of the Beagles than any other dogs in the club.
anytime someone get a wounded deer they get on the radio or phone and call for me and my beagles.they know ,if it is leaking my Beagles will find him.
that is why they have all different types, for different people.
Me I prefer Beagles.JMHO.

I agree with ya tree climber, about the beagles packing better. i actually think there are positives and negatives on both sides. so it all depends what you like. riight now i just have bluetick beagles crossed with black and tans. but when i get a little older. i would like to have 3 packs. beagle pack. big hound pack , and medium mixed pack. I think the medium pack is the most all around best when u mix a walker and or a bluetick with a beagle. because the have a little more endurance then a beagle a little quicker but not too quick. and they seem to pack half way decent. All my dogs though are man driven. which means i don't just drop the tail gate i walk them through the woods hooping and hollering that how i like it. It keeps the dogs from jumping where i don't want them to jump (most of the time
). but good luck and let me know if you know of anybody that wants to get rid of their beagle packs. Thanks Jason

After looking for my momma beagle for about an hour, I finally heard her running wide open, I was lucky enough to cut the deer off, they ran straight up to my truck about 20 yards away, too bad it was two mallet heads, but even though I haven't gotten the buck yet, I still enjoy every outing.

Pleease fix any beagles you use. It wrecks the breed. They were bred for hare and rabbits. It cost many rabbitmen countless hours fixing this problem. If you need new dog rabbitmen will gladly give you them for free.

Anyone have luck with using Beagles for running deer. I picked up two last year and they are some good dogs.
