Default beagle or jack russel terrier?

I'm still really looking into squirrel dogs. Curs and feists seem to be the best, but they seem to be hard to come by in Oklahoma, and the one's I've read about are expensive. I've heard that beagles can hunt squirrels pretty well, but how would you get rid of that rabbit instinct and get them into squirrels? Also, how about jack russel terriors as squirrel dogs? How bout you squirrel hunters, what do ya think?

feist are the best, but if it comes to the russel or beagle , I would go with the russel.asfor beagles I have had them for the past 30 years and don't think they would work out for squrriels.

bobcat, can you describe to me a typical hunt with with your rat terrior? Does the dog stay in sight, and how did you train it? Does it quit hunting and come out when you tell it to, or do you have to go through an elaborate process to get the dog off a trail and into the truck? Thanks a lot, bobcat

rat terriers are smart little dogs.i trained mine with caged squirrels she realy likes to bay them,...and then i take her in the woods kill me a few and then play with her.i will get a squirrel tail and fool around with her ..and then i will turn the squirrel loose and let her chase it. the squirrel goes up the tree in front of her.she sits there at the tree and stares up in the tree using just her eyes.she wines little it at the tree to. she likes to track to. she doesn't bark thats what i like does not spook many squirrels.she likes to kill ,they are aggressive. i call her to me when it is time to go and she will come.if you can find a rat terrier get a rat terrier.look them up on msn type in rat terrier i live in tennessee there is a kennel close to paris tennessee they breed rat terriers.she stays in sight but inventully she goes on a working trail and might just get out of sight, but most of the time she does not.

go deep hunt hard.

I think any terrier would work for a squirrel dog. We have a Minature Schnauzer and when ever she goes outside she is always hunting something. She is constantly catching field mice and moles. I think it would be awesome to teach her to hunt squirrels but my wife would shoot me if I tried anything like that.
