real men like the ugly dog. german wirehair pointer. i have one, and he is fair. i havent worked him much at all though. i have heard lots of good about wire hair vizlas. hard to find, but better hide in that tough terrain. i have had a weimerner and it got cut all the time.

Hey Phil,
I'm still here just not as active. There was no hunting for me this past year b/c the state closed the two main popular areas then increased the rates. It was already very crowded but this made it unsafe. Think 40-50ft between parties before closure.

Back to this thread,
My setter loves the cold weather. I normally trim her excess hair feathering except her tail. Last week, she jumped into a hole in the ice - shallow part of the lake - and it didn't phase her. Lastnight, she went galloping off into calf-high pool. She was having fun crushing the thin layer of ice on top. If you are willing to do a little trimming work then it would be worth considering getting a setter.

I am glad to see you are still around.. So many have left the site or just stopped posting for some reason.. I am also sorry to here about your hunting situation over there.. I couldn't even begin to imagine something like that. Although I am expecting them to shut deer season down in my area here due to the heavey snowfalls we have been getting..

Rusty loves the water too and jumped into some ice cover water on me on a exercise and training run last spring. I thought the worst of it as it was about 10 feet deep where a floage crossed the road. I had to grab him by the collar to get him back up on the ice. It never fazed him one bit. He just shook it off and went running down the road. He did point some grouse out afterwards that day to boot.

go with the brittany spaniel. best bird dog breed of all time. they have an absolutley great nose for birds if you train them properly. i know people that had a brittany that would chase a rooster for over 100 yards! overall the best dog in my opinion.

Default best dog for birds?

its hard for me to ever say what i feel is BEST dog for bird hunting.i like a american long legged lab as ALL AROUND hunting dog, but to pick best, it cant be done because of the habitat, weather and hunting pressure is so different from state to state..........
but for birds from what i see here in pa the following do real good, setters/gsp/brittany spaniel are 3 that i see that really stick out.their noses and drive seem to be very good.
go to other states and the pointers are good.

all around dog covers more than just having best nose etc but thats not topic.
