This pdf is about training bloodhounds to trail people, but it has lots of helpful tips that would probably apply to both. Congratulations on the new addition, you won't find a better friend than a bloodhound!

I once asked a dog trainer why Blood Hounds are not used in tracking game or general field use. His reply was becauseof the dog's amazing sense of smell.
This confused me until he fully answered saying it's too good. Blood Hounds will have a tendency to pick up old scents that other dogs cannot. They may then follow that scent trail to nowhere...
Is this true?I have never thought about it much until I read this thread.

Jimmy the real issue with a bloodhound is their sheer power. Tracking through the woods behind such a powerful animal being pulled through the briers is not what I would consider fun. You will consentrating onthe dog pulling and possibly miss sign as you are going to fast to see it. Most people will never need the quality of nose that a bloodhound has because they only track for themselves and maybe a few friends and they will get to a track within 6 hrs or so. But if you will not be tracking until say 20 + hrs then their nose will be just what you want.
As Cotton posted anybody interested intracking with a dog needs to order the book. I am reading it a second time as there are a few changes and additions from the first addition.

i have a 1 year old female and last season she tracked as a pup on her own. all i had to do is shoot the deer and put her nose on the blood trail and let her find it. if she strays off the trail dont worry sh will quit cold trailing and get right back on it.
