I know with Drahthaars the blood track is basiclly one of the last portions of training that you do. You can start it on simulated tracks suck as breaking apart bits of cheese, burger or hot dog and laying a trail as a puppy. you may be able to start the Daschunds earlier as they specilize more in the blood tracking try this website. www.borntotrack.com they have daschunds and I they have a book on bloodtracking and in the links section they even have a forum for tracking dogs. http://www.thetroutbum.com/messageboardfr.htm Hopoe this helps.

Dachshunds are versatile hunting dogs. I tend to treat them as a terrier with a much better nose. I started training my 1st Jagdterrier to blood trail at 5 months. If I were to start now I would start at 10 to 12 weeks. Afew liver drags to get the dog trailing (letting them chew on the pot of gold at the end). I would wait if I were training a pointing dog just because any nose to the ground work makes pointing tougher. I wouldn't limit a dachshund to just blood trailing. They can flush pheasants and rabbits, go to ground and flush foxes, no your friendhas a very versatilehunting dog. One which is very popular in Germany.

Hey guys,
I actually just got a Wirehaired Dachshund from John & Jolanta Jeaneney (from Born-to-track.com). He is exactly 4 months old today. You can start running them on trails at a very young age. Start with liver drags and work your way up. I have ran mine on a couple trails, and I know John was running him for a while allready. I can tell you that you can't go wrong buying a pup from John & Jolanta, they are so helpfull and do such a great job with there dogs. I have spoke with many many people that have there dogs and everybody is happy, and has had great results. If they have a dog that doesn't meet there expectations, they sell it as a pet.
Anyways, back to the point, If you really want to learn about tracking, I highly recomend John's book, it should answer pretty much any question that you have about tracking. It is a blood trackers bible, and it really helps Newbies like me.
I am so pumped for this upcomming season
I am more excited about tracking for people than I am about shooting my own deer. I hope training continues to go well. Time will tell.
Here is a picture of him, He has short hair, but I believe his brothers and sisters all have the long hair like the breed is supposed to have. I didn't mind getting the one with short hair, it will keep him clean, and I won't have to groom him at all.

You may want to call and talk to John about it, I don't know if it changes at all, but the standard price for this years litters was $1000. Its alot, but its worth it to me. You can make money too by making deer calls for other people.....if its legal in your state of course.

Hey Nimrod (haha),
I am a long way from Spooner, but I do spend alot of time up in Ladysmith hunting, and that isn't too far from spooner. I want to go up there every other weekend, and I plan on spending 9 days up there in early November, so maybe it would work out. Like I said, Im not sure how quick he will catch on or how dependable he will be this fall, but I would like to run as many deer as possible, for training if nothing else.I would love to help you out ifI can, even though I am still a rookie at this! I will PM you my phone #.
Happy trails!

Supaarcher- hey even a rookie dog ( esp. withthe bloodlines of yours) can do better tracking than us superior humans can.[8D] but that was part of the reason forthe inquiryas it could help both of us. when i start training my dog i hope to track lots of trails even ones that don't need a tracker. so i and my dog can gain experience. i will keep in touch with you
ok are you laughing at my handle
well that is partly why i have it because most people do not know its "true " meaning and origin. i was somewhat insulted when a friend called me that until i was enlightened. so without looking it up what does that name mean to you.
