the check in times are normally at 5am.i do very little hunting at covington however there are some good quality and quanity of deer taken with a bow and gun. I do most of my hunting and blue springs wma. it is only about 20 minutes from my house. you can download a map of all of the wmas from their web page

on either sex days you have about one chance in four in drawing a permit. on the wma i cannot imagine any one not taking a deer with a permit. at the present time nwtf is also having a habitat restoration project going on ,which should also help the deer hunting on the wma. normally covington and blue springs are in the top ten wmas every year with the number of deer taken. one thing for you to take in consideration is that the hunts are normally on different weekends, you can hunt on a rifle hunt one weekend at covington and then come back the next weekend and hunt at bluesprings. the deer hunts are on friday and saturday, however you can bowhunt on any other day, as well as hunt for small game. also i see that you enjoy fishing, blue springs wma has open pond, which is stocked with bass catfish and bluegill, with the campground located at this small lake.oh also their is a huge rustic pavilion at the picnic area that is ideal for reunions or weddings. this is where my wife and i were joined in holy matrimony almost eleven years ago.

Thanks so much for all of the imformation. When you said "i cannot imagine any one not taking a deer with a permit" did youmean bothWMA areas? If that is the case, you might hav ejust talked me into getting a license. Are you allowed to scout on Thursdays, the day before the hunting day? I don't think they allow camping at Covington.

all wmas are open 365 days a year. at the present time some of the gates are closed to promote turkey nesting, however they are open to nonmotorized vehichles and hiking. many of the wmas have many miles of hiking trailes and the wmas allow camping in remote areas during the off season. during the season archery is allowed from october 15 to jan 30 with a permit map, wma lic. and hunting lic. therefore scouting is allowed on any day before a hunt, just dont be caught with a rifle in pocession before the hunt. later on they will print the wma maps for covington and all the regulations as well as the days of the hunts and the days they will give out doe permits on the quota system at the check in station. i will be glad to send you one of these maps for covington and blue springs. you are required to have one of these map permits in your pocession at all times during all hunts. I believe all females and hunters under sixteen will receive an either sex permit. if you will be having someone with you that will of course increase the odds of someone in your party having a permit.if you come early for your gun hunt at blue springs you can scout, fish, camp, bow hunt, hunt for small game, and hike. the only thing not allowed on the wmas or the national forest at any time is the use of a four wheeler that cannot be put on the highway.
