Anyone with ideas of where to go around McAlester. I'm coming in from out of state for an archery hunt and was planning on going onto the Collins Refuge. I'm all ears....

Only hunted James Collins WMA a couple of times. There are deer in good numbers, but the only times I've hunted it, there were also hunters in good numbers.

grew up in Mcalester, webbclan is right the deer AND the hunters are both plentiful. if you are up for a walk you can get back far enough to see some action.

I'd consider driving south and east from McAlester. Collins gets alot of pressure, but if you go to Pushmataha WMA there will be less hunters and it's like 17,000 acres. Even further south is the timber land and it's a ton of land. You won't have as much competition at those places but it's rugged as hell down there. State record was broke TWICE last year in Push county.
