I live out of Kennard (small town between Lufkin and Crockett) in East Texas and, while we don't have turkey hunting around here (due, mainly, to lack of turkeys) we do have deer hunting. There is plenty of National Forest to hunt on (just have to have a license) and I am right across the road from one of several designated camping areas (not sure if you have to have a permit to camp there or not). I see deer all the time in this area and we hunt on the National Forest that joins our land.
In the five years we have lived in this house (and five deer seasons I have drove the camping area on my way to work) I have seen some seriously nice deer taken on public land and a few outstanding ones and see deer almost everyday -- all year. I do know that lease land can get pricey but if you have several to lease with you the price isn't that bad.
Welcome to Texas and happy hunting!
