1. I never mentioned anything about pellet or bb guns, I wrote "air rifles".

2. How can you possibly comment on the power or accuracy of the .17 if you haven't shot one or don't own one. It can and will routinely bust clay pidgeon targets at 200yds.

I've had pass through on groundhogs at well over 100 yds..Yeah, they move....Their little tails go straight up and twitch...

I've shot squirrels out of trees with it at 50yds...

Idon't normally carry it yote hunting, but if one would happen by while I am carrying it I would not hesitate to shoot it.

CYCLONE you can not compair a 40 or 50 caliber air cannon to a bb gun. bb gun meaning a .177 caliber projectile. believe it or not a .177 bb is bigger than your .17 caliber. the .17 being .172 in diameter. we are talking caliber size here not what drives the projectile. as for the 200 yard shot you can do the same thing will a .22 long rifle shell. a few clicks on the scope and you are in bussiness. i will not tell you how far we have broken clay birds because you would not believe it anyway.

to use a .17 cal on any animal bigger than a crow or squirrel is being irresponsible.
I have kinda been sittin back and watching this thread go on but can't take it anymore. The 17hmr has a lot more pep than what some of you guys think. I agree it is no way an ideal coyote round but it is deadly on several other critters well above the size of crows and squirrels. I have shot quite a few beavers in my day with my .22 lr cci stinger hollow points but i snagged a 17hmr last year. Well that .22 sits in my closet now. This baby is a beaver killin machine, i am serious it is the talk of all my buddies i hunt with. They let me take first crack just so we can skin out the beaver to see what the damage is. It is astonishing how a little bullet can turn a beaver skull into soup with only a needle hole in the hide. I have also used a 22mag on beavers a few time in the past and did not notice near the amount of damage as i did with the 17hmr, however that is most likely due to bullet selection. Beavers ain't exactly small animals your lookin at 50-60 pounds on the big girls but as soon as they swim out they are dead in the water with one round. I absoultey love my gun and its the best money i ever spent. The accuracy is phenomenal, i have been making all head shots on them while they were swimming with only 2 misses in over 50 attempts. I never had that kind of performance in my 22 shootin days. I have some pics back home that i will post up in a week or so when i am home. I have a skinned out beaver carcass that fell victim to the 17hmr, you can view the damage and then make your decision if its still a squirrel gun.

Ahh i found the pics floatin around my apartment here. These are some pics of a beaver i skinned out last year after being hit with a ballistic tip from the 17hmr at 30 yards.

Squirrel gun? Um i don't think so!

looks to me like you shot him a half a dozen times. pictures tell no stories. seeing is believing. as for the 200+ yards with a .22 unless you have been trained to shoot with a spotter i knew you would not believe the ranges that are possible.[:'(][:'(][:'(]

I am not arguing that the 17hmr is a good yote gun i already stated i didn't think it was a wise choice. As for Mr. Missed another you are begining to annoy me slightly. Why not admit that you were wrong instead of making false accusations that i have fabricated this story. One single shot to the head at 30 yards and remember it like yesterday because it was the first kill with my new toy. I have been on this forum slightly longer than you and have a pretty reliable reputation going here, i feel i am a good enough hunter that i do not have to make up stories and will surely admit when i am wrong. Nothing burns me more than someone calling me a bull chitter. You ain't seen it all buddy, there may be some thing that you actually don't know so if i was you i would be welcoming new information instead of calling it a lie. As for your 200 yard plus with a 22 i am not about to call that bs. I personally have not seen it, but then again i have never tried it, or never been around anyone who has so i keep an open mind, i suggest you do the same.

i have a 17 and i love it. i would use it on groundhogs out to maybe 150yds. If i had to go out any farther than that i would get out the 22-250. The 17 doesn't do the damage that the 22-250 does but it will stop them in there tracks at 100yds. I can also say that i have never owned our shot a 22 mag. So i wouldn't know how it shot. The 17 is also a very quite gun. And as far as shooting coyotes with a 17 or 22 i would personaly go with a 223 or 22-250. i know that a lot of guys out there that do shoot them with a 17 or 22 but i think that you have better odds with a higher power rifle.
