I don't know about a .17, but you can easily take down a coon with a .22lr. A .17 would be a good choice if you are hunting them because they are varmints. If you plan on keeping the pelt, use a .22lr.

Oh heck ya a .17hmr has plenty of jam for a coon. It would be ideal for this critter. It really does not damage the pelt bad at all. I was using balistic tips on beavers last spring and i had little to no pelt damage at all but it really messes them up once it gets in there.

I know very little about guns. I am only going on what I have heard mixed in with a little experiance. I have heard that if the bullet exits it leaves a very large whole. Is this true?

17Hmr= necked down 22Mag
17M2= Necked down .22 stinger.
Muzzle
17Hmr -2550 FPS
245ft-lbs
on small game like gophers the 17hmr will split the smll ones in two, when using ballisitc tiped bullets.
do 17 hmr require a lot of cleaning?
If your eating squirrels go for head shots or use the Tnt 17gr bullet. or the 20gr. these dont not have the explosive results like the 17gr ballistic tip V-max
On larger game the V-max does not cause as much damage. it goes in and then fragments. it cause about a grapefuit size ball of goo inside the animal.
Any more info feel free to PM me.

Ive shot a couple of rabbits with my 17 using CCI TNTs and with jack rabbits the exit wound was realy small. But I shot a couple of cotton tails and the exit wounds were huge. But on yotes it leaves little pelt damage. So i guess it depends on the size of the animal. I dont know about the Hornady V Maxs though.

RE: 17 hmr take down a coon?
i shot a coon at 80 yrds with a 17 hmr and i hit him good but he did run for a good 50 yrds into a hole. but i say if no less than a good 30 yrds it would have knocked him on his behind.i coon hunt alot so my dogs do all the hard stuff for me and i use a 22 long rifle to finish the job.a 17 hmr would be a lil bit to much when using hounds and shooting up in a tree but calling them and using the 17 hmr would be perfect.
