Default How do coyotes react to snow and storms?

Me and my dad are going to get out in the woods this weekend. Trying some more coyote callin then walking maybe finding a shed or two!! That would be nice!! My question woould be, how do coyotes react to snow and will they not be moving because of snow. We have about 14 inches of snow, the storm ended this wednesday and we should be getting more snow this Sunday... If you have any opinions they would help!! I hope we have some luck, even at that, it's good to get out!! Have fun, - Drew

After a snow storm and it warms up a bit. They will be moving a lot to find food.

i have found after a big storm they like to run on snowmobile, fourwheeler trails and roads. just about anywhere they can move easy. along a creek or on top of a frozen creek. they still have to eat.

Typically their patterns won't be much different than other animals during/after a storm. Usually, you'll see increased activity just before the storm as they sense low pressure system. Then less activity during the acutal storm then increased activity again as high pressure moves in once more.

I hunt and trap coyotes alot, got 113 this year, and one snare check, i got 24 yotes, and that was rite after a huge blizzard and -30 celsius[&:]. Alot of damn thawing and skinning!!! I find that calling them during a storm is not as successful, but light snow is good. I trap most of mine before or during the storm. After a cold spell is wicked as well as the yotes are hungry and have to work for a living, so they come to my bait site or to a call easily. Calling them is best after a storm, or before, as they can sense the low pressure coming, and need to stalk up on food. Good luck!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The link with my 24 yotes, only one pic of em, caught just after a large cold spell.

cheers Sako7mm!

Hey sako i just looked at your site underneith the post and saw the pic of 24 yotes from a night of hunting. Is that one night of just hunting or were there traps involved too?

andyo, all of those yotes were trapped. Deerhuntress 56 posted them for me on that site, and worded it as a night of yote hunting. It was more like an afternoon and evening of yote snaring. I run 7 snare bait sites, all within reasonably close proximity of each other, and checked 5 of em that one day and those were the results! Best day to date so far, ive had quite a few days of 10, 12, and one 17, but never 24. They REALLY get hungry after a big storm and cold weather, and the bait really becomes active. Plus, i could have a few more maybe, but missed them out in the field around 400 yards or so with my 22-250. 4 of em sitting together.. When u have a day that good, u dont really regret missing those other ones, especially when u have to skin, thaw, wash, dry, flesh, brush, stretch, etc. em all. lol. They were really out and about that week in the cold. Any more questions, id be happy to answer.

Take care, cheers!

IMO the colder it is out the better. its a no brainer too. cold=more calories burned to stay warm. the more calories burned, the hungrier they get. when is is absolutely freezing out is the best time to climb a tree.
