Fox Trapping

RE: Fox Trapping
There are a lot of things you can use. Fried chicken works pretty well on foxes, a dead whole chicken also. What are they feeding on where you live? You can catch a fox in a live trap but it isn' t going to be easy and you will let a lot of cats, skunks, opposums, and coons go first. Live traps seem to be most effective for fox when they are getting into a chicken house or something similar, set the trap by the house baited with whatever they are eating.

RE: Fox Trapping
Thanks for the info Mez!
Like you said, I' m sure I' ll catch a lot of everything before I get a fox.
Not really sure what they are eating around the area, I know there
isn' t many chickens around. Maybe mice and rabbits...squirrels? Who knows.
I just bought the trap and set it up yesterday for the first time.
I' m using tuna for now, I need to get rid of the coons before anything else.
We just recently started hearing turkey' s on the property and there seems
to be a large increase of partriges. We know there are a lot of coons on the property and I' m sure they do a good number on what ever eggs get layed in the spring.
Thanks for the information.

If you want to target coons first you may swith to marshmellows or fruit. This will keep feral and tame cats out of your trap. They can get very annoying. You catch one and they usually figure out that being locked up all night is a small price to pay for a can of tuna.

trapping fox
I would go with a foothold trap if your thinking of trapping fox. Trap size in a 1 1/2 size, and use a dirthole setup. If your new to trapping I would go with professional baits and lures. Just my opinion though.

I would and have used size 2 double coil spring trap. Buy your self some fox urine and pour a little down a corner post in a field or a stick stuck in the dirt firmly. Set your trap under a light cover of dirt, wire the trap to a heavy drag. Bingo...1 red fox.

Don' t use a #2 trap
A number 2 coil spring trap is to big to use on fox. A foxes leg is too small for that size trap. It' ll have a tendency to break the bone, and will result in a lot of chew off' s. Stick with the 1 1/2 coil spring.

RE: Fox Trapping
I took 9 fox off our property last year.along with 14 coons,6 possoms,and 5 cats.
I use the cheapest sardines in oil I can find, mix with cheap seafood cat food, add a tube of saltine crackers(makes it go farther).I use live traps and they work well.as was said you will get a lot of coons and cats.
If it is closed land, set the traps along an old road.put it in the brush with the mouth of the trap out toward the road.
That works well for me. good luck.
