Why not spend a few dollars and buy a leghold trap and some scent? If you really want to get rid of the coon, it wouldn' t make sense to waste your time trying to build a trap when there are plenty of them available.

I' m with Jimbo, you are much better off buying them. You can' t make them as cheap as you can buy them. If money is a concern I would suggest snares, you can get a dozen good coon snares for about $15.

If money isn' t a concern the sleepy creek 1 1/2 offset is the best coon trap made,IMO. They will cost about $95 a dozen. If you don' t want to spend that much the Duke 1 3/4 offset is an excellent trap for about $75 a dozen. For coons I like traps with offset jaws, coons can be bad about chewing and if you break a leg on one they will twist the leg off or chew it off. This is a lot less likely to happen if the traps have off set jaws.

CORD,

I make my own box traps, if that is what your interested in? Mine are 14' ' x14' ' x36' ' . Build them with 1/4' ' rod frame and 1' ' x1' ' wire. trigger mechanism is pretty simple.

Here' s a link to my trapping photo' s on webshots. I think this same set would work well for coons.

http://community.webshots.com/user/arcticbowman

click on trapping photos and go through the photos in order, it will show you how I converted a five gallon bucket using a 220 conibear into a set.

Arctic, those bucket sets work really well for coon, a little fish in the back and they dive right in. Need to check state laws though, some states won' t allow body grip traps of a certain size to be set on land.

we can only use live traps in Fla.
I make my own fron 1/4" rod and 1x2 welded mesh wire.24" x24" x36"
doesn' ' t take but a few $$$ per trap.they work great for me.
sell a few coons for meat and your traps are paid for.
