Default good gun rest?

I posted this on predatormasters and am looking for all the info i can get. I am wondering about a good gun rest for shooting out to ranges of the 300 yard mark, both from a bench and from the hood of a pickup truck. I have a .223 and plan some varmint hunting (coyotes and crows) and some range time and had initially thought about a varminter rest, but am considering any and all good rests around $100 and less. The last thing I want to do is make a blind purchase and be disappointed so I need your recommendations.

Thanks,

GB

Can you guys tell me the difference between the field model and the bench model? I see the carrying strap on the field model, but cannot seem to find any info. as far as the widths and lengths of the two. Which do you guys use, and is it used in both the range and the field?

Thanks,

GB

Thanks for your replies guys. You' ve put me on the right track. Last fall a friend had one of the bulls bags (not sure which model) at the rifle range but at the time I just didnt know what it was and wasnt too interested in it, no reason without the varmint rifle. I' ll give him a call and check into it much closer.

Thanks again,

GB

I personally like the Harris bipod. It' s light, adjustable. And can be removed quickly. It also doesn' t interfer with a sling, as the sling attaches right to it. and it is priced under $100.00. Hope this helps you.[img]

I' m more of a fan of bi-pods for what you' re considering. That way, you always have it with you, and don' t have to carry it separately. Harris makes a bench model that' s rather short, and telescopic, so it would give you good options on how/where to use it.

Also, you might be careful when shooting off of your truck hood, if you have a " starburst" in your windshield, you might turn it into a " spiderweb" . The concussion wave of your rifle' s muzzle blast has to go somewhere, so if you are shooting straight across your hood, as opposed to nearly straight in front of your truck, the wave will hit your windshield, a couple buddies of mine found that out the hard way in years past. Pretty funny when it happens to someone else, not so much so when you' re writting a $300 check for new glass.
