RE: 07 Predator contest submission pics.
Sorry to hear of your loss HighDesert, hope the lord gives your family strength to carry on with her memory in your heart. Thanks man that really means allot. Her funeral was in the polish language at a polish catholic church No one but maybe 2 people still speak polish in my family So I wrote a eulogy in English LOL for her funeral and my brother read it, 2 days later and I'm still getting calls from my family on how beautiful it was:) I'm still sad but Ive accepted it. Now its time to do some hunting Im gonna head out this morning and tomorrow morning. I need to get some points up. |
RE: 07 Predator contest submission pics.
Went out all day yesterday with a calling buddy, despite the warm temps. We traveled about 100 miles east to the sand hills. Gotabout the results I expected. We called in 7, shot at 4 and got two between us. Most of them didn't cometo the call very anxiously, I'm sure because it was short sleeve weather. BUT, we did what we could. I should've had one other, but ended up with my usual.

WTG Howler! Congrats on your success
Great picture too! |
RE: 07 Predator contest submission pics.
Good job, Howler. I hope that you got the area scouted pretty well. I was able to do a little today too. The ranch I was talking about leased some areas to Outfitters for Elk season. So this weekend wouldn't have been a good time to go. I did talk to the ranch manager and he said that after they are gone, that it is a GO for coyote calling. He did let a friend and I do some calling away from the area that all of the outfitters were, but didn't have much luck there. When driving through, I was able to pick off a couple of road yotes, the first two pictured. Then we went looking for some other BLM and I managed to pick off another, third picture. I then let my friend do the shooting for the next four sets. Three came and three went out a little wiser. [:o] Good weekend all in all. I will head out to the ranch next weekend to scout the areas that the outfitters were hunting and then the following weekend, if you are available, Howler, we can head out there.
Didn't check the camera's date before taking these. This is the one that I shot on Saturday. All pictures can be found here. http://www.putfile.com/number40fan/images |
RE: 07 Predator contest submission pics.
Yip, the coyotes need to be thinned when you can drive around and shoot more in a weekend than most guys see in a day!
I know for a fact that the weekend after Thanksgiving is no good for me, on call that weekend so I can only get out that Friday, my no work day. SO, we'll have to try later this winter.! You just never miss do you! ![]() |
RE: 07 Predator contest submission pics.

RE: 07 Predator contest submission pics.
I'll get your points added Steve. Syco tweety huh, that's one wierd sounding call isn't it, BUT the coyotes don't seem to mind! I've called a few in while using it as well!
Nice job! |

We'll find another date. I'll get a few more areas scouted. Snow will fall and everything will liven up even more. |
RE: 07 Predator contest submission pics.
I havin a bit a trouble workin the calls and the gun at the same time the yotes are being squittish cant seem to get them closer then a buck 50 maybe its my setup? but anyone in AZ wanna join me?

RE: 07 Predator contest submission pics.
What problem with calling and your gun are you exactly having?? What I do is when I find the spot I want to call from, I sit down and extend my bi-pod legs out. Then I shoulder my rifle and look through the scope to make sure that the legs are at the right height for the terrain that I am on. Adjust if needed. Then I lean my rifle back on the ground so that it will right where I need it when I sit up. I'll lay back now on my backpack (still on my shoulders) that is filled with a towel, shirt, or whatever I can find to help prop me up off of the ground enough so that I can see over the vegatation. Now it is time to start calling.
If you use a mouth call, having a string attached to it around your neck is very helpful. If you are using an electric caller, there shouldn't be any problems at all. Either way, start off quiter than normal. Work your way up to a louder call if you don't get anything in the first few minutes. Once you see a yote, stop. Make short burst of noise if they are far out to get them moving and stop when they do. Once they are within a 150 yards, you should just be able to coax them in with lip noises. If you are getting the yotes within 150 yards, that is close enough to shoot and hit. If you are not comfortable shooting that far while sitting and using a bi-pod, practice some first. When you do plan to take the shot, try to sit up when the coyote is moving and either has it's head down or is looking away. Then when you get the yote in your scope, bark at it to make it stop. Your heart will more than likely be pounding a hole in your chest right now, so take your time, yet be quick about the shot. If you miss, bark some more and see if it will stop one more time. |
RE: 07 Predator contest submission pics.
The issues im having is where ive been hunting its real thick manzanita and cat claw where several game trails funnel in you can see with optics to about 200 yards down one of the paths but its too thick for a clean shot with a rifle so ive been out there with a shotgun and T steel and a T & F Xtra full choke. id like to get them in to atleast 40 yards. Im using an electric call buts it homemade and runs off a cd player so I have no control over it and if a yote comes in too early in the track Im having issues coaxing them in with a mouth call. I figure If I had someone with me to take turns on the calling I could do away with the electric call and maybe make this stand work. Ive tried other stands with open prairie shots with a rifle but theres just too much activity to compete with ie quail hunters the yotes are holding tight to cover.

I'm looking at northern Arizona on the first week of January HighDesert... nothing confirmed, but I'll drop you a line if we end up out that way. I'd like to get over into NM so we can night hunt... but I've got a new daytime rig that I'm anxious about so I'll be happy just to get into a target rich environment again!

RE: 07 Predator contest submission pics.
Well, got back last night from KS. and what a great Thanksgiving filled with family visiting to quail hunting to predator calling. Even took time to put some hard wood on the truck for the fire place. The weather co-operated nicely for all of the above. Got to go calling with several different friends and family members and between us all, we shot 10 coyotes, and of those 10 shot, I shot 5. My nephew set his new personal record of "close shot and kill of 5 steps. That was awesome. I killed a sweet double and the rest were singles. We got some real good footage. SO, without further a do, I'll share some photos. This first one was a single, last stand of the day. You can't see it in the pic., but this coyote had mange. One 3" bare spot and his gaurd hards were half gone.
|
RE: 07 Predator contest submission pics.
This next pic. is the results of a day and a half of calling. My brother shot 2 of them, I shot the other 4.
|
RE: 07 Predator contest submission pics.
Way to go Howler.
This last week/weekend was a bust for me. Snow and a full moon seemed to make it a lot easier for them to eat so they didn't pay any attention to my calls at all. Can't wait to see the footage. |
RE: 07 Predator contest submission pics.
i gotta give it to ya howler, you take awesome pics with an amazing gun;)thanks for the help, ive narrowed down my choices, now its all about working up the funds for one. i just cant decide between a .204 and .223... decisions, decisions lol
do you only mouth call or do you ever use an ecaller? |
RE: 07 Predator contest submission pics.
Well, I gotta say that I haven't been a bit disappointed with the .204 cal. on coyotes, with an even dozen taken this winter so far with mine. I had shot the first 7 with loads topped with 40 gr. berger match hollow points and this weekend I used loads topped with the 35 gr. berger match hollow points and I had zero exitsincluding 3 bang flops, the other two only made it about 50-75 yards before piling up.
I'm not sold on the moon effecting calling results, yet. My buddy went out calling most of the day Thursday with his dad and cousin and called 7 coyotes and a bobcat. Then we called all day on Friday and called in 7 again. Hunted Sat. morning and only called a single by 11 a.m. before throwing in the towel, and then called 4 in by noon Sunday morning out of7 stands. We thought that Sat. morning was going to be real good because we had fresh snow and a departing storm, but it was the worst of the 4 days. Mouth calls only. We prefer open reeds. My pics. usually have some good, some bad, and some ugly...the gun being the good, the dead coyotes being the bad, and yours truely rounding out the 3![8D] |
RE: 07 Predator contest submission pics.
I think your part coyote yourself howler by how many you rack up you seem to think one since you always come on with pictures. What do you do with the yotes you take? Do you just toss them or skin them clean the hide?
|
RE: 07 Predator contest submission pics.
We kept the 6 in the one pic., left the other lay do to the mange it had. The fur is just now prime and my buddy will sell those 6 in the round, as is. Not sure what they'll sell for, guessing between $10 and $20/ea.

What's all that white crap on the ground? |
RE: 07 Predator contest submission pics.
Here is my tally for the weekend.
Mangy one that we saw while driving. Shot the one at 400 yards or so in a 20+ mph wind that was at my 4 o'clock position. Barely caught it in the gut. It was able to walk another 100 yards or so before it finally died. I also like how it looks really mean because of the way I am holding it's head. Next four that I called in today. All of them can be seen here. http://www.putfile.com/number40fan/images |
RE: 07 Predator contest submission pics.
WOW....this is the first time i havbe looked at this contest but #40fan and Howler are ON A ROLL!!!!

RE: 07 Predator contest submission pics.
Bullet Hole, you're part right, #40fan is on a roll!! Rollin' right over everyone else that is.
I wonder when #40fan is leaving to go on that vacation that I suggested?:) |
RE: 07 Predator contest submission pics.
Still waiting for that wire transfer that you promised me. :D
Actually, the old lady is wanting to go to Hawaii next year. Hopefully, the contest will be over by then otherwise we'll have to postpone. I think she will understand. ;) |

|
RE: 07 Predator contest submission pics.
Nice job Steve with the little hmr. Looks like ya took head shots? Unfortunatly, we didn't get badgers on the list for this contest, but I'll bet we will include them next year.
#40fan, how many coyotes did you guys see, how many did you guys call in and what sounds were you using? |
RE: 07 Predator contest submission pics.
Bullet Hole Bailey
Your right about Howler and #40 fan. Some body ought to chain a cinder block or two on each of their legs to slow them down. |
RE: 07 Predator contest submission pics.
Howler, we saw three on Saturday. Shot two of them.
Sunday, I saw three others that I didn't get to shoot. I was doing the calling for Saturday when we only called in one and I was using the Lil-Dog white caller and the Johnny Stewart. Same calls Sunday, but I was alone. |
RE: 07 Predator contest submission pics.
ORIGINAL: stevetatum i also called in and shot a badger today i didnt upload the pic cause i dont know if they count? let me know if they do |
RE: 07 Predator contest submission pics.

RE: 07 Predator contest submission pics.
Here are two. There is a pretty embarassing story that I could tell you about two other coyotes, but I think that I will just keep that between me and a few close friends. :)
