im not gonna go w/ .204 or .243 because of expensive ammo and around my area those kinda guns cost 600 and up ingood shootingcondition. .17HMR shooters, can u beat 2 1/2" groups at 100-150 yards because the .22 mag i am looking at can do that well and at 100 yards you only have to aim 3/4" high sighted at 50yds which is pretty good w/ ballistic tips. also, i am shooting at long ranges and need enough energy to take down a coyote, and the best .17HMR bullet at 150yds only has 97fpe against the .22 mag's bestbullet 151fpe at 150yds. and most shots i will be taking will be at 100+ yds. prices of bullets aren't much different. only about 1 dollar at the most and if it is worht spending a few extra centson a good bullet then im for it. the .22 mag im looking at is a savage which is the gun im talking about that has 2 1/2" groups at 100-150yds. also, i have a friend who owns a .17HMR and if he shoots five1/16"metal plates behind each other at 75 and less yards the bullet blows up. im not looking for speed but energy and accuracy. i also want to keep the fur so im not sticking w/ big bullets.

I have 2 Marlins. One in .17 HMR and one in .22 Mag. The only difference ive found in the accuracy is .1 inches at 100 yards. I would rather take a .22 Mag out just for the knockdown power but they are both too close to say which one is a better cartridge.

Compare their accuracy under hunting conditions at 200 plus yards.

If money is a problem i would sugggest a handi rifle from new england firearms, in 223 about 250 bucks, great ammo for $25 for 50 shots but if u are dead set in a 17 or 22 mag i would go with 22 mag if you want to use it for coyotes no question. I have a 17 and love it and yes CAN be accurate everyones telling you they can shoot 5 shot touching at a 100 yards and i can do but they arent telling ueven a5 mph wind can really push that little bullet around making it worthless if u are going for a head shot on a yote because u have lack of gun and need to thread a needle with a shot. so i wouldd go with the 22 mag.

Is a .22 mag that much more stable in the wind?
