Default First day on the traps

Well, that was almost too easy! <img src=icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle>

I only had time to put out one set the other night, and decided to use 280 conibears on a box set. It is open on both sides, and I have notches cut out so the conibears fit just right on both sides. There is a tray in the middle of the box that the food goes in, and because it is open on both sides, the scent can pass through easier. I went out to check it and managed to get an arctic fox. I still don't think I'll do that well on them this year since there was a large rabies die off this summer, and I don't think I'll set too much for them anymore. I know the population is in decline right now, but I don't think if I take a half dozen of them they will go on the endangered species list!

What surprised me is that the conibear didn't kill the fox. The bars were around his neck, and he didn't look that much worse for wear. I put it down quickly, and will hopefully get out tonight to set some more.

Anybody else having luck yet?

Artic,
I just got into trapping a few years ago and now I think I'm gettin the hang of it. So far this year on my short little line I've got 2 coyotes,3 skunks,3 oppossums,1 coons, and a nice 20-25 lb bobcat. I know not much but I only have about 15-20 traps out and the predator population is kinda hurting in my area because I slayed them hard last year and that is what I want. Less predators, more upland game and waterfowl. I am putting out 18 snares and about 6 more footholds tomorrow night.

Good going! I've never set more than 5 sets at one time, but plan to start hitting it a lot harder come January this year. I got my first red last night, a huge cherry one. He measures close to 60&quot; nose to tail.

I hear fur prices are way up this year, do you plan on selling any hides? I've bartered a couple, and given a couple as gifts, but never got into the selling of raw hides.

Artic,
Yes, I sell all of my hides except for ones I tan myself just to put on the floor. Prices on about everything are going up except beaver. If you have lynx cat up there, go after them, they are running for about $150 for a nice one.Reds are really neat, but around here we dont have them in large concentrations, just a few here and there but they sure take a toll on the small game.
