After hearing horror stories from friends of mine that hunt public land, my decision is to stay strictly on private land.

A friend of mine was doing some bow hunting on public land (National Forest land) in Virginia, only to be nearly shotTWICE in one day. If blaze orange doesn't stand out enough for everybody (and he's avid about wearing orange - maybe a bit much in my opinion, but I'm no expert), then public land just doesn't leave me feeling comfy inside.

The public land around my area is over-hunted to say the least. The thought of me going out there during the dark for coyotes and foxes scares me. I will take a walk for the usually rabbit and partridge, it's fun.

I aim for National/StateForests. Many people look over them, and they can produce nice deer. You can get way back, away from everyone. Enjoy some true piece and quiet.

We hunt gamelands in Caswell, NC. Actually just yesterday, rode out to Wake Co. to check it out also. We use bows coon hunting. We do fairly well, but the sport has suddenly become REALLY popular. We've been on three hunts, and no coons....we've got 2 young dogs we would really like to finish out, so when they have no target, we end up doing a lot of walking.

Never done it for small game, the closest public ground around here is deer/waterfowl only. But if I could, I would.

I've had success with small game here in Indiana but deer are tougher due to the pressure they get. The places I go are generally off the beaten path so I rarely see other hunters.
