Ive been trapping for a few years and love it. I dont believe it hurts an animal bad. Ive got my hand in traps and it scared the heck out of me but it didn't really hurt. Trapping is actually more of a challenge than hunting. even with a bow, you can cover thousands of square feet. With a trap, you are trying to get an animal to step on a trap pan that is no more than 4 square INCHES. The death of a trapped animal can be more humane than when hunting. The kill shots are close with little room for error. The key is using the right type or size of trap. If you do that, the animal may get a numb foot for a while, and one well placed shot will put it down clean.

I would like tobegin by saying that I grew up trapping in Illinois with my father. When you start out young I think you develop the ability to ignore what you are feeling (at least more so anyway). However, I can't say that trapping ever bothered my anymore than say, having to dispatch a deer with a knife because I was out of bullets. Hey, it's the cycle of life. Rejoice in it man, because you will eventually die and feed something yourself. Let's just hope it ends as easily as possible for all of us.

I agree, when I was younger and I got my hand stuck in a victor #1 in my dads store, it scared the heck out of me but it really didn't hurt after I finally calmed down. It did bruise pretty good across my knuckles though.

I saw alot of fox and coyotes when I would walk my dads line with him they all reacted the same way fight or flight. Since they couldn't get away once we got up close they would turn to fight, dad shot them with a .22 and that was it. I have never feltsad for any of them, most were just sitting there calm as can beuntil we came up to them. Every now and then we would come up on a trap where the coyote had chewed his leg off butit was rare and we usually came across them again later in the year with the spot light while hunting them at night. It's something to see a three legged coyote running across a field.

I later learned in a wildlife biology class that the animals nervous system is very different then ours. The K9 would go into stages of shock after getting trapped, between that and the pressure from the trap it was considered a common thing for an animal to knawl off it's leg if it was left in the trap to long.

Most of todays traps have been tweeked to help ensure that an animal cant even reach his foot with his snout(no marketin feet) a short chain on a staked trap,2 or more swivels, attached in the center of the trap.and realy important is to have propper placement, size, and pan tention on the traps.
The antis are always using 100 year old technoligy as a reasion to ban trapping. They start swinging a rusty old wolf trap with teeth to start tugging on the uneducated publics heartstrings. Most outdoorsmen dont know how to use a trap.It takes a good mentor, and a whole lot of iwannalearn to round the corner and start making effective sets.Onece you have it though, you cant loose it,and all the ranchers want you for there verry own.A bunch of dogs can hurt them and most times, youre the only trapper they know.

The end isn't real pretty for most scavengers, whether or not they wind up in the jaws of a double-springed Duke. They're either brutally maimed in auto collisions, infected with horrible disease, suffer horrific orthopedic injuries that leads to their starvation, or killed by something a little higher on the food chain.

I think a lot of hunters find ease in what they do, by hiding behind the rifle/bow, and convincing themselves that the animal is enjoying a quick, painless death. Newsflash - drowning in your own blood is probably not painless, and I'm sure the animal is stricken with complete terror. It's just easy because you're 100 yards away, instead of 3 feet. Trapping, like any other form of hunting, terrorizes animals. It's an undeniable fact. Another undeniable fact is that any animal will eventually die for some reason or another, even if not at the hands of a hunter/trapper, and it will not be a pretty scene. Death isn't pretty, but it's real.

You can hide behind your deer rifle, and usually once the smoke clears, the agony and dying is all-but-over. If you're a trapper, you're seeing every last flick of the tail. I think trapping gives a stark realization about what you're doing out there, but I'd argue that if you can't stomach watching an animal die up close and personal, you're probably only fooling yourself by trotting out the shooting iron in deer season. It's very much the same thing. There's no shame in being bothered by that stuff. Most people can't watch a raccoon flop around after having a .22 round buried in the skull. Most people couldn't work at a slaughterhouse, watching cattle be bled out, skun and butchered. Most people couldn't watch a paraplegic whitetail bawling and crawling with a broadhead buried in its spinal column. They would have nightmares for the next 10 years.

The moral of the story here is that if you think trapping is cruel or heartless, while bowhunting or rifle hunting is not, you're only fooling yourself.

If you spend enough time outside, you'll see that mother nature is cruel. Death is never fun. It's never pretty, no matter if it's at the hands of a hunter, trapper, predator, disease, weather, starvation, vehicle, injury or any combination of those factors.

Lately, when I see trapping photos or stories, I find myself feeling sorry for the animals being trapped. I don't understand this because I could and have shot a coyote in a heartbeat. I just don't like the thought of them being in a trap for several hours or overnight. Also the thought of them seeing me or the trapper approach, while they can't run ishard for me to swallow as well. Am I a wimp or what??? I have nothing against it whatsoever, I just don't think I could do it myself. Maybe I'm going soft in my middle age???? Like I said, I can shoot an animal with a gun or bow with no problem, I'm just wondering why this has been bugging me?
I'm new to hunting and I love it. But if there were some aspect of hunting for whichI didn't care, I would stay quiet about it. Why? Well there are a whole lot of people who object, not only to hunting, but even to just eating meat. By expressing myreservations about some way that others take game I would be giving support to the people who are opposed to hunting of any kind. You have heard of "divide and conquer?" Well that's what dissension within our group leads to.

Ive noticed with trapping alot of the animals are asleep in the trap when you walk up on them because they realize they cant get out. Lots of times they have been asleep until I get right up next to them but by then its to late because the metal pipe is starting its baseball swing at them. It all comes down to the same concept of killing a animal humainly and its just as humane as hunting.

If it is done correctly and according to the law most animals are not in any pain once caught in a trap. there have been extensive studies done on this subject by several groups and they all say the same thing if the animal is caught with the correct sized trap and the sets are attended to reguarly the trapped animal suffers very little pain and stress. If a conibear or similar style trap is used the animal is dead within minutes so very little pain is inflicted. and i agree with daddyslittlegirl if we all can't get along, once our sport is banned and yours is next. We all need to support each other.
