have you looks into the stevens model rifles made but savage. they are very much at all and EXTREMLY accurate. i would go in a 308 cal. (JMO) but if you get it you can get different grains for all kinds of hunting from yotes to deer to elk for that matter. i use a 308 and so do alot of others i know. again just my 2 cents but worth lookin into

well, if your looking at a good gun for both and remotly cheap i would go with a 223, 243, or a 25-06 if your looking at going after bigger game than whitetail as well, then i would go with a 270 or a .30 caliber

For varmints and whitetails, a 25-06 is hard to beat. There are a lot of nice bullets in the 110 t0 120 grain for whitetails, and lighter 75 and 87 grain bullets for coyotes. Lighter guns like the .222 and .223 work better for varmints if you are saving the pelts, but they aren't necessarily choice deer rifles.

I would also recommend the Stevens/Savages. I believe the only real difference is that the savages have the "accutrigger" which, considering Savage use to get bad reviews because of their triggers and because a Savage is still cheaper than any of the Big names would make me recommend the Savages above the stevens. .243 would be a good caliber as well as the 308. One lends itself to varmints but is certianly a capable deer cartridge the other is pretty much perfect for deer but may be a little harsh on the pelts of varmints (IF that's a concern) If saving pelts isn't really a concern any of the popular deer cartridges that don't kick alot would make excellent double-duty rifles. .243, 25-06,270, 7mm-08, 308 Now I would consider a 260 remington (a 308 necked down to .264 (or 6.5mm))also, its a real nice cartridge on ballistic papers and the 6.5mm bullets have amazing BCs and SD...but I handload, and assuming you don't a wide selection of available ammo is of serious consideration. I'd give the 270 and 308 the nod for that. Check around your local stores and see what are the most popular calibers around your area are, it'll make selecting a "flexible" cartridge alot easier.

as stated above. i have a savage model12 stainlessin 308. i would go ifor it if you have 500 t0 spend. if not go stevens. i shot my brothers and its not to much different than the savage but the trigger would be a little hard to get used to i think

I would recomend the Ruger M77 Mk II they are only about $475 at walmart and they are extreamly accurate. My 300 WSM and .223 will shoot .5MOA at 100 yards. For a good varmint and deer gun I would say the 25-06 or .260 would be good choices.
