We haven't had any issues with ours. You definitely don't want to leave it on if the ranger isn't running though or you will drain your battery pretty quick.

AR15 / .223 is a much better option than any of...

AR15 / .223 is a much better option than any of those. I'm not a big fan of .17 HMR as a hunting rifle unless you're shooting squirrels.

I've had whitetail deer walk right infront of me when I'm laid down. I've also had a coyote run out infront of me about 5 feet and make a b-line for my decoy and call which was another 100 feet away.

No I haven't been charged by a hog but I have unloaded an entire .357 magazine into a hog and he kept running for a mile before he laid down. Those creatures are pretty tough.
